Cradle Cap - Fort Stewart,GA

My son had cradle cap for 2 months! I could not get it to go away with baby oil and a brush to use while shampooing. I ende up taking it all off gently with a comb, but ALL of his hair came out with the scalp flakes.

Now, my 3 month old is starting to get it, and she has so much beautiful hair that I do not not want her to loose. :(

I was told about the brand Mustela today. They have many products including shampoos, and a specific cream for cradle cap. Any experience with these products?

Or, how did you rid your child of cradle cap? Did all of the hair come out too?

I know . . . a bald baby isn't the end of the world, but I am very attached to my daughter's full head of long, dark hair!

What can I do next?

My pediatrician told me my daughter would grow out of it (and she has). She said that her body hasn't learned to regulate the pores on her scalp yet. In the mean time she suggested to gently rub olive oil on her scalp then wash it out to help loosed the flakes. She said not to use baby oil because it the perfumes could irritate her scalp.

Our son had it bad at 2 months old.
I rubbed olive oil into his scalp and then used a very soft tooth brush to first loosen the scales, then gently combed the scales out.
His hair didn't come out (he was born with thick brown hair that was over an inch long and his never thinned out much at all).
It took several washings to get the olive oil out of his hair but his scalp never flaked out again (till he hit puberty as a teen).

my daughter would get this worse than my son ever did. if it gets this bad and nothing is working see if the doctor has any recomendations.

after my daughters head was wet and water soaked on her head for awhile. i would gently scrub it off. after it was finally gone i would shampooh her hair. with the bubbles in her hair a tiny drop of Burts Bees Baby oil ( other baby oils didnt work because of the chemicals and would make it worse) that kept it away and I did this oil with shampooh everytime until she was about 2 yrs old and seemed to not have issues with it any longer

I had great luck with the Mustela foaming shampoo for newborns. It cleared it right up, and it was so pleasant and easy to use I'd use it for a baby even if they didn't have cradle cap.

One of my kids had cradle cap, and I did absolutely nothing. I never saw a reason to do anything. It's just dry skin, right? Is there something bad that could happen if you don't get rid of it?

I just never understood what the big deal is. He grew out of it.

Try some Betadyne (sp?) douche. Pat it on with a cotton ball.

My daughter had it for over 6 mos. Finally, the pediatrician recommended using a drop or two of Head and Shoulders every other time I washed it, and that helped clear it up. If you try it, be careful not to get it in her eyes.

Mustella worked beautifully! My son had terrible cradle cap and we used the shampoo and the cream with great success. Read the directions carefully and follow them b/c it's not as simple as "wash and lotion". I don't remember the specifics, but I remember being a little surprised.

Remember too that babies shouldn't take too many baths! You need to let her scalp produce enough oil to keep it "supple" while you comb out the flakes. Our pediatrician had suggested that we wash his little scalp two or three times a week at the MOST and wipe him down with water on the "off days".

I love the Mustella products. They are gentle and truly "fragrance free". They are pricey, but they work!!

Hey! My son and daughter both had cradle cap. You can use head and shoulders on it (or the generic equivalent) and just let it sit for a few minutes on their hair, do that about three-four times a week. According to my pediatrician, unless it's really bad, cradle cap does not hurt them and you can leave it largely alone. My son had at least a little of it until he was about 5. My third child never got it, which I thought was weird. Good luck!

My daughter experiences the same type of cradle cap as yours. I've asked numerous docs & finally one made sense; my daughters head isn't producing oils like normal so the doc said try washing her hair once every week. So I tried this & she'd still get it (but not as bad) then I started washing her hair once every 2 w/k's & I haven't seen it since. I was using baby oil as u mentioned & she was loose clumps of hair :-( I knew I had to do something bc she is 5 & I can't have her walking around w/o hair in the same spot.

Everyone recommends baby oil or olive oil. I've always hated using oil because it's so hard to wash it all out. Instead I used baby lotion for a couple days. I'd massage it in every day and then wash with baby shampoo after a couple days. It sis a great job of getting rid of the cradle cap. My daughter is currently doing it with my newest granddaughter.
