So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. My mom had always used baby oil and I did use that on my 17 year old when he had cradle cap, but he didn't have much hair. I was afraid to use it on my little girl because she has soooo much hair. I will check into all the remedies recommended. I had a feeling there were new products out there. Every thing has changed sooo much in the last 17 years.

Thanks again.

Dear T.,

I just went to Dr.Greene.com drgreene.com
and went to the A - Z questions on the right side in a little box - they have Cradle Cap on the list and it is a very interesting article. Tells you everything you would possibly want to know about Cradle Cap. The short version is to put a little bit of baby oil on it and rub it in and let it dry a bit and then brush her hair with a soft baby brush. It is just some extra skin cells that haven't fallen off yet. But there is more to know if you want to go to Dr.Greene.

Rub olive oil onto the scalp then comb the cradle cap gently off. It will take a little time but it worked for my daughter and didn't come back. Time well spent.

Mustella worked great on my son's cradle cap. It costs a little over $10. It is sold at Right Start also. I tried oil and all the other stuff that my friends and my son's pediatrician recommended, but the one thing that worked the best was the Mustella shampoo.

My daughter had cradle cap at a couple of months old and I was able to get rid of it with olive oil. I rubbed it into her hair and let it sit for a few minutes and then used her little baby comb and was able to comb it all out. You just have to make sure to wash their hair out really good! May take a few tries, especially with longer hair. After getting rid of it the first time, she has not had it back.

On the cradle cap... this may sound a little out of the ordinary.. but a friend of mine has a baby with it. She was told by her grandmother that the clear, white of the egg is what you use. Leaving it on for about 30 minutes then washing it off with regular baby soap. I know it sounds weird, but I tried it on my now 14month old and you know what? It really helped. After just a few uses ( every 2-3 days) the cradle cap started to dissappear. Good luck and let me know how it goes if you try it. LD

Hi T.,

My son had cradle cap as well. We just basically tried to comb it out every day. We used a little baby oil before combing it to loosen it up. Also they have a cradle cap brush we got at Babie's R Us and would brush it while we washed it. It took some time but it eventually went away.

I am having the same problem with my 3 month old she has a ton of hair. I have been using mineral oil and a comb to losen the scales then washing with head and shoulders. when it looks red and irritated I also put 1% hydrocortisone on it, she also has exzema and the doc recommended using it. It has helped quite a bit, her head is still a little flaky but nothing like it was 2 weeks ago. I don't know what you have been doing/using but this seems to be helping my lil girl even with all that hair.

This disease is a type of dermatitis in newly born babies. The common age when this disease occurs is the first three months from the time of birth. This disease can be controlled easily with cradle cap treatment.
While surfing on the internet I found www.cradlecapsolutions to remove honeycomb disease naturally using home remedies such as applying mineral oil, petroleum jelly or non alcoholic lotions.

Put some baby oil on her head and use a clean toothbrush to gently scrub her entire scalp. Then simply wash with baby shampoo and rinse! It may take two or three times to completely get rid of it, but you'll see a HUGE difference after just the first time. My son had cradle cap too, and this was the only thing that worked for us.

My older son had cradle cap late, when he was over a year old. I found this shampoo by Mustela that worked wonders! The cradle cap was gone w/in a week & there was no messy oil or picking off flakes. Just lather up the shampoo, let it sit a few mintues & then rinse. I can't remember the name of the shampoo right now other than the brand but on the bottle it says something about cradle cap. It is a bit pricey but well worth it! And even tho it's pricey, it lasts a long time cuz cuz you only need a small amount to create any lather. I had one bottle that lasted close to a year. I found it at Nordstrom. I think Babies' R Us might carry, too. Otherwise try smaller independent baby stores. Good luck!

Removing cradle cap from long hair is difficult, but it may be removed with hair care. <a href="http://www.aboutcradlecap.com/&quot;&gt;Cradle cap treatment</a> for long hairs needs oiling of hair. Applying coconut oil on the hair then washing it mild shampoo will remove scales from hair. Repetition of this method can remove seborrheic dermatitis

The only way I know is to scrub the living daylights out, and use baby oil in between. Make sure to use the hospital scrubber and use it at an angle. . .that worked best for me. Just section off her hair and have at it!

Hi T.,

When my daughter had cradle cap we tried the baby oil and other "home remedies". It actually made her break out. It was terrible. I felt so bad. I bought a Gerber 4 step cradle cap remover kit. You put on the lotion, comb it in and loosen the cradle cap, shampoo it out and put on a moisturizer. I only had to do 2 treatments and it was all gone and never returned. The kit was only like $8.00. It was worth every penny.

Hi T.,

When my son had craddle cap my aunt told me to use bay oil and rub it in to his hair and head in the morning and let it soak through. Then wash it out and use the soft brush to comb through it. I did this twice and my son never had craddle cap again. IT worked for me. Have a great day.

My baby had craddle cap really early. But if you keep her scalp oiled well, you should have no problem. The only thing is my baby is african american so it's easy to oil his hair and it look normal. I used johnson's baby oil gel. It soothes and keeps it from getting flaky. If you don't mind the greasy look, I'd go for it. Or what you could do is part and apply the oil to the scalp.

I just spoke to my pediatrician about this. She said to take baby oil and massage the scalp. Then take a baby comb and gently comb the scalp then wash baby's hair as normal. Just as the other Moms said.

With my kids I just made sure to scratch there heads when I washed their hair to loosen the cradle cap. I never used any special shampoo or cream. I did use the soft brush method, but it will make babies head red and if you do it too much it may irritate them.

My pediatrician recommended cold cream (I used Pond's, this was 8 years ago and my daughter still has sensitive skin. I only had to use it a couple times, gentle massaging, and she was fine). It worked amazingly well.

I had the same problem with my son (Now 2 years old). I had someone tell me to use T-Gel. It's not for infants/toddlers, so I was not going to use it, but nothing else I used worked. The girl that told me about it said use the smallest amount. Which I did. It completely went away. I only had to use it 2 times in a long span of time to rid of the Craddle cap.
If she is sensitive to stuff, I wouldn't recommend but this did work. TINY BIT goes a long way!

Good luck

My daughter had cradle cap or cradle "crap" as we called it for quite a few months. What my daughters ped. recommended was actually using a little head and shoulders with a soft brush. I would put her in her infant bath tub and then use a wash cloth to rub around the head and shoulders with a little water and then put a little h&s on the brush and lightly brush her head. Within a few times of using it the cradle cap was gone. It worked wonderfully!

Dear T.,
I used the baby oil too (messy) but found that a soft toothbrush was more gentle to massage and brush the scalp and remove the waxy base of cradle cap. Once gone, massage that area when shampooing and it should not come back. PATIENCE! Good luck!

The Mustela shampoo really works wonders. It takes a few times to get rid of it but it is very gentle and smells great. I highly recommend it. You can get it at Nordstrom's for about $11 or there is a store called Dagerman's off Sahara and Rainbow who carries it as well. I am sure there are other stores that is where I have seen it. Or get it online. It comes in a circular bottle and comes out like mousse..

T., how often are you washing the baby's hair. When you do, what do you put in it? Do you oil the hair every day and what kind of oil do you put in it? All of these questions will answer why your baby has cradle cap. It kinda like dandruff. The baby's scalp is dry and that is flaky skin. You should wash the baby's head every day and don't put baby oil or lotion in the hair. After you wash it lightly scrape the skin off (not to the scalp as that will hurt but the top layers eventually the bottom layer will loosen and you can get it out also). Since the baby has long hair, part the hair with a comb and rub lightly in some olive oil in each part. Yes, olive oil. It doesn't have the perfumes and stuff that the baby oil has. When you have finished, lightly massage the oil into the baby's head. Repeat this everyday until the cradle cap leaves. It worked for me. Let me know how it came out for you if you decide to try it. T.,
Let me first say, I feel for you! My second son, Tristan, had it so bad that I had to slather his poor head in oil to loosen the flakes!
As a mom of three boys, I feel obligated to tell you that many of the products used for babies have chemicals in them that are extremely harmful and caustic. There are many safe options out there and are easily researched by going to the Environmental Working Groups website at:
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1
You are also more than welcome to contact me with any questions/concerns you may have. I am affiliated with an internationally renowned health and wellness company and can give you many ideas for safer products to use. Your daughter may be having sensitivity to the products you are currently using!
With that said, I suggest putting oil on her scalp, massaging it in with your fingertips, giving her a warm bath with NO soap, using a baby safe brush or comb to get as many flakes off as you can, and putting a bit of oil on her scalp again. NO dryer, NO soap, NO harsh scrubbing! Scrubbing can damage her sensitive baby skin and cause a response that will only create additional flaking.
Good luck and let me know if you would like more information!

Craddle cap is one of those things that will go away over time (it did with my son) but there are a few things that you can use to help moisturize her head to lessen or eliminate it. AND it has to be done from start to finish, meaning from what you bathe her in to the oil and lotion you put on her head to soothe it. I am and Arbonne Consultant and their Baby line is the ONLY wash that does not leave my son with flakes, red marks on his face, dry skin, etc after a bath AND the diaper cream is the only one that doesn't make him cry (plus it's not sticky, it goes on like hand cream). ALL the baby line is made without nut oils and lactose, but it is soy based (if that is an issue for her) as well as being certified Vegan. I've tried the gerber package that's supposed to help with craddle cap, scrubbing like crazy, and a bunch of other things, but this is the ONLY thing that helped get rid of it and keep it at bay.

If you want me to sent you a week's worth (may last longer) please let me know and I'll mail it immediately.

Take care,
M. M
