Cracked Sore Nippes

baby is 12 mo. and I had yeast with another child due to antibiotics. This feels just like that, and I'm tempted to treat me and baby for yeast, though I have not been seen by a professional and no one took antibiotics. I'm having work done on my house and kids in a program this week, so getting to the lactation consultant 30 miles a way is not going to happen. I have left- over gentian violet that I've applied to my nipples and getting ready to treat babies mouth as well. Is there anything else this could be? I have a paper cut like soar on both nipples and the skin is soughing off all over. Pain yes, nursing ouch. he had been using his teeth on me because he was sick and mad. I was also chaffing in my ill fitting bra and its been hot, so thought the pain was from those things, and let this yeast get out of hand.

What can I do next?

When I was breastfeeding, I used Motherslove Nipple Cream and it worked really well. It is all edible, organic ingredients, so you can use it before you nurse and it is safe for the baby. It isn't something you can actually treat the baby's mouth with, but it won't hurt her if it's on your nipple while she's feeding.

Could be thrush. If so, nothing but meds will cure baby and you can use Lotrimin on your nipples (after nursing). Sounds like what you have (cuz I had it a few months ago).

I totally agree 200% with Lansinoh ... It's pure, 100% natural and safe for babies when you nurse (no need to clean it off). It's lanolin, which is a waxy "substance" given off from sheep. It's very thick, though, so if your nipples are really sore/cracked, I recommend you put a small amount between your thumb and another finger to warm/soften it before applying. It's kind of expensive, but worth it and it goes a Looooong ways.

As an added note, it's great for cracked heels, elbows and other such problem areas. You can get it pretty much anywhere - Walgreens, CVS, WalMart, etc... It comes in a purple container.

It was a life saver for me. I would apply it after each feeding, and about 15 mins. before each feeding and definitely between feedings. (so, yeah.. pretty much 24/7) hahaha

Also, try not wearing a bra if possible for a few hours a day so the bra doesn't chafe and gives your nipples time to "breathe".

Best of luck... let us know if you try it and if it works for you.

Congrats on the baby, mama!

Make a solution of 1/4 vinegar and 3/4 distilled water and put it in a sterile bottle you aren't using. Keep a plastic baggies next to it on your nightstand or wherever. Every time your done nursing dip a cotton ball in the solution and clean off, then let air dry. Once dry use the lanolin, Better than lanolin in my opinion is Dr. Jack Newmans nipple cream, its natural and it works wonders, you can have your OB/GYN or primary care dr call it in to the pharmacy. You can read about it on Jack Newmans website or Kelly Momhttp://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/nipplehealing/

I had this pretty consistently when my little guy was born as he was a preemie and had severe colic as well so was literally nursing 24/7. The above was great. Also if you can't take it anymore just go to the OB/GYN or dr and get an rx for diflucan, you'll feel better pretty much instantly. In bad cases I did the vinegar, the Jack Newmans and the diflucan all together.

I like Nystatin ointment better than Jack Newmans for severe cases like yours with a crack. If the baby has thrush in his mouth the Nystatin solution works faster than gentian violet to me.

I don't really see the need to see the lactation consultant for the nipple thrush unless its due to the biting which needs to be solved.

Good luck!
