We are going to Florida on May 1st and while there we are going to Disney World. My 5 year old son is so geeked about going on vacation since we never get to go anywhere. I want to make it fun and exciting for him in the days leading up. I was thinking of doing some type of countdown activity with him when we reached the 30 days to go mark and am looking for some good ideas on how to do this. If anybody could give me any ideas that you may have that would be fun for a 5 year old, please let me know.

Thank you all!!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your great ideas. I ended up making my own big calendar, the month of April with a countdown going backwards, so April 1st = 30 days until Florida. I laminated it and then made little mickey heads, cut and taped them over each day. Every day my little guy pulls off a Mickey head to reveal how many days left and other fun information for that day. He really seems to be enjoying it and looks forward to pulling off the Mickey head every day. Although he has peeked at some of the days in the future, lol.

I got bright colored post-it notes and made a sign that said countdown to Disney. The kids decorated it with stickers and drew mickey heads, etc. ThI started in the back of the post it writing 1,2,3 etc until I was at day 40, then pulled the rest off the top. I taped the whole stack to the sign and the kids took turn pulling off the post-its and announcing how many days left until we left (since we were driving down from Ohio) to the whole family. It was great and my youngest really worked hard to learn those higher numbers so she could announce them without having to be told. Helped with counting backward too!
Hope this helps :)

Get the Steven Birnbaum disney book. It gives you all sorts of tips and info on the parks. He does a new one every year or two so it is up to date. Get a calendar and start marking off the days. and set up a too do list. (pack bags, make an airplane bag and let your son help with that) pick books and cd's etc to take on the plane. snacks and so forth. shop for little stuff you will need like baseball cap, sunblock, sunglasses etc. we let each kid pack a backpack of stuff to go on the plane. they loved it. most local libraries will make a vacation pack for you. it will have books, coloring pages, cd,s tapes etc. good luck

Get a printout of Mickey Mouse and color in a different section every day. OR cover up the poster (the castle would be good) and reveal a different piece every day. I have seen advent calendars done like that. You would have to precut and label the cover up pieces.

We were just there 2 weeks ago. Hope it isn't as busy for you as it was for us. It took us two hours to get from the parking lot to the actual park--the lines were for tickets, then for the train, etc. Plan on getting there as early as possible. It was so crowded inside that we were bumping into people on all sides just walking around. That being said, our four year old still loved it.

You could get a calendar and mark off the days and watch a different Disney Movie every weekend?

When we went we bought an official guide to Walt Disney world years ago. I am not sure if the book is still out but it helped us to park in better places and also how to manage our schedule to avoid long lines. It made our stay great. You could make a chain with Disney characters on it and each day you could talk and ask questions about the character for the day. What a wonderful vacation.
