Can anyone recommend a great female counselor specializing in teens dealing with anxiety and mood swings. I want her to be able to cope with life and her quick fuse and irritablity is causing so many issues. She is taking a generic lexipro called Celexa and has been on it for a few months because of anxiety. This has helped a great deal. I want her to talk to a professional to help her with coping mechanism. Help!

What can I do next?

Gabrielle Peak is a lifesaver for many teens. She does one-on-one counseling. And, she used to atleast, runs a teen group session.

I don't know if you are interested in teen counseling that has a Christian foundation, but if you are, I have heard wonderful things about the Timothy Center in Austin from friends who have sent their teens there. They are licensed counselors etc... http://www.timothycenter.com/

Hi M..

I am a health counselor specializing with women and families. I can do a free health history on your daughter because many times what she is eating is the cause of the mood swings and anxiety. She needs to learn simple easy techniques to detoxify her body so that long term, she is able to handle stress.

Please email me at ____@____.com I can give you my website to download a health history form. It is free. I love working with teens.
Good luck, K.

Plan on interviewing several counselors. If they won't do a free 10-min meet and greet, then cross them off the list. I interviewed 4 after calling 6 (2 wouldn't meet first). Because I felt comfortable with my choice of counselors, our sessions were productive from the start, leading to a quicker resolution of my issue.

Be flexible, if your daughter is uncomfortable with the counselor you've chosen, go to the next choice on your list. People forget: counseling is very personal and if it's going to facilitate healing there has to be trust.

I am concerned about the prescription drugs. No child should be on prescription drugs -except for genetic disorders. The FDA does not allow clinical testing on children so all children drug doses are a guess, as are side effects.

Research is also coming out that children who take brain/mood altering prescription drugs are more likely to become addicted to illicit drugs as teens or young adults. Not to mention the long term effects on her organs and brain chemistry.

Consider finding a counselor that will also help her develop coping-mechanisms so she does not need drugs.
