when my 3 year old was born they let his heart rate drop below 50 for over 25 minutes. my mom had a fit but the nurse said it was fine. well 3 months later we noticed him acting strange so we took him to the doctor and found he was having seizures. but they were not noticable so we dont know how long this went on for. they took him off the meds at a year old and now he is 3 and has had about 10 seizures this month. ive explained his birth to everyone everytime and the nurses reaction makes me feel that it was his birth that caused this but his doctor still says that its not, but they say that they can't find anything wrong with him and gave him some meds and send him home. then a week later he's right back there and everytime they are worse. today christmas day we found him turning blue because he was having a seizure. could this really be from when he was born? what else should i try? please any advice will help.
Anything's possible. My suggestion is to find a reputable pediatric neurologist affiliated with Children's Hospital.

As the mother of a child with seizures I can imagine how difficult this is for you. Many people have seizures and there is no known cause. I would urge you to forget about whether it has anything to do with birth..... because what difference does it make except to torture you with..."what if that had not happened."
Find yourself a good and progressive pediatric neurologist, if you haven't already. Your child may grow out of it all together. If not there are many medications, and new ones being created all the time.
Some people believe allergies can be a contributing factor. Foods, etc... Allergy testing is a consideration. Others have seen improvement with herbal remedies and vitamins. Certainly building your child's immune system with appropriate supplementation would not hurt. As a Shaklee Distributor I hear stories of success all the time from people with all sorts of ailments.
Most important. Life Happens. It's not your fault. We all do the best we can with the limited knowledge we have at the time. Know that you are doing what you can for your child.

I don't know about the heart rate but seizures can be a vaccination side effect.
You better find a GOOD pediatric neurologist!
Take your son to a pediatric neurologist as soon as they can get him in. Sounds as though he may have epilepsy. I had this condition as a child and grew out of it in my early teens but it was manageable with medication. I would also find a new pediatrician if the one you are using is not taking this seriously (they should have referred you to a neurologist long before now). Good luck and hang in there.

I don't know what the root cause of your son's seizures are. The doctors might never know. It sounds a little like you _want_ it to be from his birth, not because you want him to have the seizures, but because you want the explanation. Honestly, what would it do to know? (Not that I think you'll ever be able to). The reality is that now, 3 years later, the reality is that your son is seizing, and you have to find a way to treat it. You can't go back and re-do his birth. I don't mean that obnoxiously, but I think that your energies could be much better directed in figuring out how to help your son get better than figuring out what caused the problems in the first place.
Get a new doctor, take him to specialists, ask LOTS of questions. Hopefully you get the seizures under control quickly.

1)Find another doctor asap.
2)Then find a Webster Chiropractor and see if he has any nerve impingement that could add to this.
3) Then check Fiengold, and WestonPrice and make sure you are not feeding him anthing that makes this worse, and that you are feeding him everything that he needs for proper neurologic development.
4) Check the side effects of the drugs he has been put on- I find that the side effects often are the problem.
When you have done 1-4 contact me, and let me know how those went, and see if there is more to be done.
I think you may have been given wrong direction, and it is time to do this differently, what do you think?

I am so sorry you are going through this! Talk to every doctor, specialist that you can until you get the answers you seek. If your Dr is telling you nothing is wrong, but you know it your heart that there is---get a new dr. Don't stop seeking answers till you get the help your son needs. It sounds like he had a pretty traumatic birth--could cause seizures- I don't know. But it is worth checking out and at least finding a diagnosis so that you can get the seizures to stop or at least slow down. best of luck to you.

First thing I thought of was vaccinations. If you neurologists can't find anything wrong with your son, I would check into seeing a naturopath for detoxification. Vaccines are known to cause seizures. Disregard this if your son isn't vaxed. Good luck to you.
Are you still seeing the same doctor? Was it a pediatrician who let his heartrate drop or did it happen in the delivery room? I would absolutely get a second and possibly third opinion and yes find a children's hosptial. You may never know what caused it originally, but they should be able to find at least some answers right now. Shop around and hang in there, I'm sure it's terrifiying!
I'm so sorry your beloved child is having this problem, A.. I agree with Patty W., the reasons for so many health issues are too subtle and complex to ever know for sure. Preemies are more subject to seizures than full-term babies, but doctors don't know why. Oxygen deprivation may or may not be a cause. And many, many people have seizure disorders with no known history of medical trauma.
Since there's no way to go back and undo the past, it might be mentally healthier to move forward and deal with this challenge. Yet I hear your language, "they let…," and I wonder if there was actually any way for them NOT to let his heart rate drop. Births are exceedingly stressful for mom and baby, and very often unpredictable events happen. If you believe medical negligence is a cause of your son's symptoms, you'd do much better talking to a good malpractice lawyer rather than us moms.

Has he had an EEG yet? That might tell you where the seizures are being triggered from (what part of his brain) - it's the starting point.
