Could It Be Allergys or Something Else in a One Year Old?

Well I can't tell you what it is exactly for your son , only your doctor can tell that.
But my son went through something similar. He started with a bad cold and then a cough which wouldn't go away. He wouldn't sleep well in the night because of the stuffy nose and cough. Took him to the doctor and they told M. it could be viral since he had fever too for 3-4 days(I had thought fever was because of teething). He stopped eating anything much , so took him in again and they told M. he had developed a ear infection. So he was on amox, didn't clear up. He was on antibiotics again since it didn't work first time. His fever was long gone and his cold and cough didn't go away for another week or two.So he was sick for about a month or so.My son had just started daycare , so I was told he fell sick because he was exposed to so many germs there.
Has anything changed for your son - environment wise? Have you started taking him to a new playarea or a friend's place or started daycare? I have no idea about allergies. Can you call your nurse advisor and discuss this with them? I hope your son feels better soon!

Of course allergies. My son has horrid allergies and has been on zyrtec since before his 2nd bday. Call your pedi and ask how much to give him and go from there. It can't hurt. That last antibiotic he took was a strong one and if that didn't clear it up then its not infection. My poor son, he didn't even know he could breathe through his nose until he got older and we started nasals! Now he has sinus migraines (not fun). Give them a call and get him started on it. My 3 yr old had a chronic runny nose for 6 months-the drs kept telling me it was viral--could be allergies but allergy testing came back fine! So I guess it was a cold?

He developed a cough about 5 months into it! I finally took him in after 2 months of no improvement--they did do a chest xray to make sure it wasn't pneumonia, but it came back fine! I finally begged for an antibiotic because his nose still had not cleared up = the endless cough! It was about a week maybe 2 weeks after the meds his stuffy runny nose went away. His cough lasted another month, but is finally gone! So it can take some time!

If your pediatrician says its okay and your son can tolerate it (mine cannot they get horrible moodiness and excitability) try giving him some type of allergy med before bed! It will keep the post nasal to a minimum which will help with the cough!

My now 21 month old just woke up with the same symptoms with a nasty cough! I'm not looking forward to going through this again (atho I'm hoping his are truly allergies)

I'd have him checked for allergies. My daughter had a very similar situation and was constantly gettign ear infections from the nasal drainage. Come to find out, she is allergic to cats...and we have 2 of them. If my peds office would of checked for this much earlier, we could of possibly avoided her also being asthmatic. My daugheter did nto wheeze in the beginning either. This is just my personal experience but other then the trama of the blood draw, it is an easy blood test to lay your mind at ease.

As an allergy sufferer it sounds like allergies. The coughing is due to irritation in the throat. He could be a sinus sufferer too as I am and the drainage from that can lead to coughing. Take him to a allergist(sp) and you could try to give him Zyrtec or Allegra. My daughter has allergies too and can't take Allegra. It makes her itch. So try different brands. Good luck and hope that cough goes away.

See if your doctor will do a childhood profile blood test. Sounds similar to my 18 month old son and we had this done recently. Turns out he is fairly allergic to peanuts & eggs. As well as mildly allergic to milk & cockroaches. His only symptoms were eczema & congestion that regular allergy meds weren't clearing up. We've had previous experience with a food allergy (peanuts) with my older daughter so that is the main reason we had our son tested.
The childhood profile will cover other things besides food like dust, animal dander, etc. Good Luck!

I am disappointed that the doctor just kept on giving him antibiotics instead of investigating further. If you can there is a great osteopath in Richfield at Integrative Wellcare who treats things very naturally. She works with a lot of kids. It could either be allergies or acid reflux. I think a lot of my 16 year olds' issues started from too many antibiotics and not enough investigation from the doctor. She now is struggling with immune deficiencies. Augmentin is such a harsh antibiotic too. My daughter can't even take it. You may want to find another doctor who listens to you.
