P.A.
Take him to the dr. just to be safe, but if the dr. says it's not pneumonia or some other infection, you can use steam from a vaporizer or run a hot shower and stand in the bathroom with the door closed. Steam clears congestion.
my baby is almost 3 months and has developed heavy conjestion and a cough what is the best thing to do at home or should i just take him to the doctor?

I have a 3 month old as well and we live in a very dry area which only makes it worse. We have a humidifier running almost 24/7 and it has helped soooo much. A lot of times that is what the doc will tell you anyway, besides maybe giving him cough syrup. They tell me that using the humidifier and keeping her nose clear are the best things. I hate using the bulb, but if you can get anything out do it. As long as I keep the humidifier running she does so much better, when I forget to fill it she reminds me. :) Good luck!
I agree with S H - don't let them get dehydrated - and go to the doctor!
PS - If you are breastfeeding, make sure you boost your Vit C and other vitamins, too - what you eat/drink will go through your milk to the baby!
love,
R.
PS - Ask your doctor about a baby vitamin, too- you can get them at most pharmacies and health food stores, too!
Always take them to the doctor, you want to have your babies ears checked for infection. An infection can happen at any time and happens quickly! I took my daughter to the doctors when she had a cold and her ears were clear. The very next day (less then 24 hours later) she was swating at her ears. i took her in and sure enough she had an ear infection. The doctor will also check the babies lungs.
Alway safest to take them to the doctors. I always end up taking my daughter in (she is 22 months now) into the doctors at least twise during a really bad cold. (just to check her ears)
Good luck!
You should probably take your baby to the dr. No need to wait till the office opens, you could take him to a quick care place right now. Good luck, and I hope he gets better soon! :)
Definitely take your baby to the doctor. You never know what is wrong and with young babies, it can develop into something more serious quickly. You'll want to cover your bases.
The first time my son had a cough, I was so worried. Fortunately, it was time for a check-up appointment. The doctor said he was fine and normal and it should go away in a couple of days. His cough was pretty dry.
A couple of weeks later, he had the same dry cough so I thought maybe it was the same. But then I started noticing he was wheezing as well. I took him to the doctor and she said it was good that I brought him in. He had asthma.
Then not too much longer later (I know, he's been getting sick a lot lately), he was coughing again. This time I think he got sick because we took him to day care for the first time. He had bronchitis.
So, yes, to be on the safe side, take him to the doctor.
Definately see your doctor. Guessing is not the thing to do with a 3 mo old. My son ended up having croup about that age.
Like my mom always says (and the one thing I actually listen to) is "If you have good insurance, take him to the doctor" It's better to be safe then sorry. And the doc never seems to mind when I bring mine in and it turns out to be nothing. :-) Good luck

Your baby is only 3 months old... with symptoms like that, or any symptoms for that matter, YOU MUST TAKE BABY TO THE DOCTOR.... ASAP!
DO NOT use over the counter medicines... because you do NOT know what is wrong with him. You cannot "risk" just using something willy-nilly.... especially at his young age. Over the counter meds are NOT for infants.
You do NOT want it getting worse... or have him hospitalized. Do not 'guess' at it or rely on hindsight.
ALSO, you MUST FEED BABY ON DEMAND, as much as possible, especially since he is sick. If he cannot feed, he risks getting dehydrated. And dehydration in a baby is very dangerous.
Take him to the ER or Doctor right away.
All the best,
Susan
Try elevating his head while he's sleeping, put a humidifier in his room, give him extra baths, extra cuddles, Avoid taking him out, give him foot rubs, use the snot sucker just before feedings. Don't worry. This is a sign that his immune system is working. Call the doc if it makes you feel better but you probably won't need to. Check out Naturally Healthy Babaies and Children by Aviva Romm. Good Luck!
Hi,
My son caught his sister's cold when he was about 3 weeks old. He had it for about a week, then a week later caught another cold. He's finally healthy at almost 8 weeks old. I did take him to the dr. who checked to make sure he didn't have the dreaded RSV virus, which is in the lungs and takes a long time to recover from. Apparently, this is RSV season and the hospitals are full of cases. Unfortunately, there isn't any good treatment for the virus, it just has to run its course. You might want to have your baby tested for that (it's just a swab in the mouth). Otherwise, the dr. had me keep my little guy elevated all the time, even his changing table. Of course, use the humidifier at night and nap times. What seemed to help the most were showers with him. One dr. wanted me to swaddle him and put saline drops in his nose and suck out any mucous with that bulb sucker. However, I couldn't do it, it seemed to violent to me for such a tiny baby:( But I did try to suction stuff out when I could.
Good luck! I know how stressful having your little baby sick is:( He'll be fine**

Hi R.,
Definitely go to the doctor, however, cold air humidfier is great. I run it every night and it helps so much. Some saline spray in his nose several times a day will help too but he'll probably hate it.
Good luck!
I took my 5month old to the dr for the same reason and it turned out he had to be on a machine called a nebulizer. It sounds scary but it was a great help for him due to the congestion was interrupting his sleeping. I first tried the vapor humidifier but it was just not enough.
yes please do take your baby as soon as possible to the doctor. what your child is experiencing is not normal. we as adults could barely sleep with congested nose. imagine how a baby feels with heavy congestion and coughs. i know of one case that worsened to pneumonia. hope your baby is well soon.
Take him to the doctor!
Hello R.,
I say: run (don't walk) take him to the doctor. elevate his crib (put a rolled towel UNDER the matress) so he can breathe easier. run a humidifier.
FYI: babies under six months old DONOT know how to breathe through their mouths. Good luck! ~C.~
I would take him to the doctor to make sure that it has not settled in his ears. This junk is going around right now. Use a warm steam vaporizor, saline drops for his nose and suction him out & keep him warm. Also you can tap on his back to try to loosen up the conjestion, especially after he has been in the steam for a while. When he sleeps try to prop him up for better drainage. If it gets really bad you can always turn on your shower as hot as it will go, close the bathroom door and hold your little one for a while as this will give some really good steam to loosen him up.
take him into his dr (not the er). what can help is to raise the head of his mattress so hes not laying flat. also get a cool mist humidafire to ease his breathing. also use the bulb serynge and clear his nose out durring the day and before he sleeps. if it last more then 7 days take him back. keep taking him back until your sure hes cleared up. fyi my daughter at 8 months got sick with a cold (in dec) and it took until febuary to find out she had asthma. also note that her lungs were clear sounding despite a wet cough and congestion. she also has only wheezed once that her dr has heard. i have never heard her wheeze. key things to look for with asthma in babies is coughing that worsens at night and a cold that just doesnt seem to go away. good luck!
Hi R.:
I suggest taking your baby to a doctor. At seven months my son had nasty congestion with a fever and he ended up having pneumonia. I am not trying to scare you but with the little ones they can't tell us what is going on so it is best to get them checked. It will put your mind at rest if it is nothing more than a cold but if it is something that needs treatment better sooner then later.
I hope your breastfeeding!!!!
if your not...then thats why your lil baby is sick
Make sure he is propped up when he is sleeping. Use a humidifier in his room. Also, try Baby Vicks on his feet, covered with socks when he sleeps. The bottoms of the feet soak up the Vicks and it does not give any worry to him getting it on his hands and then in his mouth. Be sure to cover his feet with socks when he has the Vicks on. Best of Luck!
humidifiers work best but if you dont have one I've always bundled up my children and went for a short walk outside since the air is cooler, it's thinner and that helps. my doctor also recommended giving a couple of ounces of water before bed since it's thinner they won't get as much congestion as formula, I just read that someone said your baby is sick if your not breastfeeding, well if you're not don't worry about it, even breatfed babies get sick, my nephew was breastfed and he was sick all the time, more often than my son who was never breastfed. So don't worry, this happens and the best thing is to make your baby comfy
Call the doctor and get a humidifier for your child's room. The steam helps break up the congestion in the lungs. My son is 10 months old and has had congestion problems since he was about 3 months old also and has had RSP. Another good option is to bundle your child up and get him out in cold night air for a few minutes too, because the cold will constrict vessels and make it easier to breathe for a spell.
