My latest issue(aren't babies bringing up something new everyday?!) is that my son has a pretty nasty cough and cold. His cold started last Saturday with a slight fever on sunday(which went awy the same day). I have been suctioning his nose and using saline drops/baby vicks rub/vaporizer/vapor bath/humidifier. Two days ago, his cold started to go away and then a pretty nasty dry cough(more like a barking cough) started.
I took him to the doctor yesterday evening to rule out any serious infections. She checked his ear, nose, and chest for any signs of an ear infection/congestion in lungs. He was fine and she told me not to worry and the cold will take its course. She also mentioned no meds (pediacare/little colds etc.
However I feel really sad to hear him cough during the day(amazingly he doesn't seem to cough at night when he sleeps). But his daytime cough sounds like he's been in a smoke room:) This is the first time he's got something like this and he's pretty active and happy otherwise.
Do any of you have any home remedies or anything different I can try to help him get over this quicker and help him feel better (other than holding him and spoiling him rotten:)

try a humidifier. they are great, and it may help a little. there is even this vics vaposteam stuff you cna put in it. Other than that, it will have to pass on it's own. hope he feels better soon.

Sounds like the history of my son....who is now 10 and pretty much sounds like that all winter! The first time this happenedhe I was up w/ him all night. At that time his pediatrician told me to run a hot shower and sit in the bathroom w/ him for about 15 mins, then take him outside into the cool air. It seemed to help. He would get this every fall/winter. He was diagnosed w/ asthma @ age 2.
Believe me when I tell you, my son was 3 months premature and due to his weakened immune system he had colds I swear every other day for almost a year. The pediatrician told me the same as they tell you. The medicine really doesn't help, all you can do is saline, suck, humidifier, vicks and try to keep some clear fluids coming if you can. They can recatch their own colds so quickly it seems like they just stay sick forever. I know how you feel but the truth is you just need to stick it out and do exactly what you are already doing and hang in there.
I agree. Try running the shower on very hot to steam up the bathroom. Sit in the bathroom with him for a bit while he is coughing during the day and maybe the steam will help. I was also a big fan of baby's vicks vapor rub which you have been using. I would stick with that and maybe put some on before you bring him in for the steam. If the cough seems to be getting worse at any point maybe it warrants another trip to the pediatrician.
Ahhhh the croup cough. First time my son had it I rushed him to an ER because I had never heard it before. Scary isn't it. Best thing to do, that all the peds. and er doctors say (because my son also has asthma so I am overly cautious), is to have the shower blasting on hot water, and sit in there with him. It will calm the cough temporarily and help him to breath better. Also the dr.s explained to me that the croup cough is more of a throat thing than a lung thing, so you may want to feed him lots of popsicles and cold things to keep the swelling in his throat to a minimum. I know the croup cough sounds horrible, but every dr. that has seen him for it, says it is normal and not to worry.
