Cost of Daycare

I would like people to please tell me what they pay for their childcare and what extras they also have to pay, like late fees and food. Do they pay for unscheduled days off? Are they fine paying that amount and if not, what would they consider a more fair charge? I need information concerning what people have currently and if it is not what they want, what is? Thank you for any help you can give me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank the people who replied so quickly to my questions and gave me just what I asked for and more. People here are great. Since I moved from Chicago, I've met few since I work at home from 6AM to 6PM and later, so this web site is most helpful. Now I am wondering why people choose centers as opposed to homes and how would they improve on each? Thank you again for any information and opinions.

P.,

I used to run a small in-home daycare. Feel free to send me a message with your email address, and I can send you a copy of the contract that I used (it's been within the past year) that has all of the details. I used the same contract that I had for my son in full-time daycare and it was standard as far as what parents paid for, days off, built in vacation, etc. so you have steady income. I never had any problem with the conditions as it was what most in home daycare providers use.

I pay $200/week for 5 days (which is lower than average, I think, but we've been with the same person for a while.) There are no formal late fees as far as I know, but we're an early pickup family. We pay the same every week whether he goes or not. We pay for one week of the DCP's vacation per year. The DCP has a full-time assistant and a backup (relatives) so she has never had a day off due to her own illness.

Some of the families in the daycare negotiate a part-time summer schedule, but I don't know the details. I have no problem paying for days we don't use - everyone needs to pay their bills.

I think it depends on what area you live. An average daycare center in my area (Lisle/Naperville) charges more than $200 for 5 days (full time) and only a little less for 3 days (part time). On top of that, we also pay extra around $50 for each additional classes, such as music class, gym class, etc... you add that all up, my average monthly day care cost is around $1000. That does include all the food and snacks and art supplies etc, but not the diapers and wipes. I know some of my friends who lives in Indiana and works in Chicago pay a lot less, like half for their kids' daycare. but i think in Chicago area, that is the general cost. Also we still have to pay half of the tuition even if our child is out for a week. the late fee is $1/minute, but usually they don't really charge us, as long as we call ahead let them know we are running late. I do think it's a bit high but we we don't really have much choices as full time working parents and the teachers in the daycare seem accountable. I guess if you want to run a small daycare at your home, you can charge a little less and be more flexable to attract more people. To me the cost is not alwasys the most important thing (well most of the time, it is) but my biggest concern is knowing that my child is happy and safe and learning new things everyday. Word of mouth might be your best shot to run a popular and profitable home daycare center.
