I'm about 35 weeks along and really considering cord blood banking. My husband and I both feel strongly that it is something that we would like to do, however there are a few different companies out there to choose from. I've spoken with Via Cord and they seem good, but I know that there are other companies out there. I'm curious to hear from moms who have gone through the process, what company they chose and why? Thanks for any information you may have!

What can I do next?

We chose Cord Blood Registry to bank both of our children's cord blood. For us, the decision to go with them was a combination of location (they are only a 90 drive from us in Tucson) and the fact that our OB and our hospital both have lots of experience working with CBR. It was a very simple process to do the collections and CBR has a courier service to call to transport your kit to their facility. We were able to bank 6-8 times the required amount of cells with both of our children. It isn't cheap to do the initial collecting, but they offer discounts and the annual fees are reasonable.

We donated both of our older boys' cord blood to the public cord blood bank because we realized that the chances that it would be a benefit to us would be incredibly slim, but the chances it would benefit others was much greater. My husband is bi-racial, and there are very few samples that would benefit African Americans, so we thought it was the best option for all of us. Plus, it was free!

Hi, we donated our daughter's cord blood to the public bank and plan to do the same with our next arrival. We arrived at this decision after doing some research. The likelihood that you will ever need it or it even being a match is slim so we decided to let it be available to whomever might need it.

I chose Via-Cord. I wanted to cord blood bank with my second child (15 years ago), but let it slip through the cracks. I DID do it with my 3rd child, hoping that if any of the 3 of them ever needed it that it might be of use...like an insurance policy. I just told the doctor ahead of time and had everything lined up. - I chose them (10 years ago) because they were the only company that I was aware of at the time. They may have been the 1st? Anyhow, they have a history, expertise, financial stability. They keep in touch with news of cutting edge developments of cord blood use, etc. I have been happy with my decision.

I work for A. Registry, a cord blood bank. Please look out for our upcoming Cord Advantage product launch that saves many more stem cells as compared to cord blood banking alone. Also, we have better pricing than most of our competitors. www.cordadvantage.com

There has been a lot of talk about it being a marketing scam. ABC News did a show on it. Be sure to look into it - it's expensive.

A., I chose Cord Blood Registry to bank with both of my sons. I am a HUGE supporter of this so I really commend you and your husband for wanting to do it. I tell everyone I know who gets pregnant, but I think the cost is a bit of a turnoff.

The process was very smooth and they could not have been nicer. They contact me to check in and even sent my son a book for his first birthday. I really recommend them. I don't have a specific reason why I chose them, it just seemed right after reading all the material with my oldest son. The process is so easy, you just take the kit to the hospital and they do the rest. Just be sure to tell the nurses when you get admitted.

I don't know if your OB has given you any discounts, but I can get you $250 off if you decide to bank with CBR. You just have to give them my name, so if you decide to do it let me know and I'll give you my full name.

Good luck with everything!

A.

Please do not do this. The blood in the baby's cord belongs to that baby. You need to research delayed cord clamping and tell the doctor not to clamp the cord until it stops pulsing. I am a former NICU Respiratory Therapist. This also makes it a much easier transition for the baby to begin life outside the womb because they do not have to breathe right away as they will still be getting oxygen through the cord. The cord will continue to pulse for about 10 minutes or so. This is a very calm and peaceful way for the baby to begin life. During this time the baby also gets all of its rich stem cells. Below are some articles on why it is a good idea to delay clamping the cord.
