This may sound like a strange request, but does anyone have any advice on removing cooking odors that have taken over my whole house? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Happy Holidays!

i have this little resipe for homemade potpourri: one orange quartered, tablespoon of whole cloves and whole cinnamon sticks. put them in a small sauce pan and cover the mixture with water. let it boil and your house will smell really fresh and earthy. i do this every winter. :) if you try it, i hope you like it. :)

I would recommend a high end product called Lampe Berger. It ranges from around $30 to some very exclusive pieces that go for thousands. It basically burns alcohol..scented or unscented that destroys the bacteria causing odors. Simple to use and beautiful to display.

I highly recommend purchasing one at Boobe, which is an women's boutique in downtown Kenosha - just upstairs from Carolyn's Coffee Connection. It's definitely worth the higher price tag...

I agree with vinegar. Cheap and it works. Put bowls of white vinegar in inconspicuous places (like top of fridge, etc).

This sounds weird, but I promise it works! Take a capful of fabric softener and add about a cup or so of water to a saucepan on the stove. Turn to about med. high and get it to a boil...then, turn off the burner and just let it sit. You'll be amazed how great your house smells!! I do this sometimes right before we leave and then when we come home, it's great.

Good luck!

Put out shallow bowls of vinegar to absorb the odors.

Our dishwasher backed up last week causing a horrendous swampy smell in the kitchen. I tried burning scented candles and spaying Oust, but neither worked. My husband put an Apple pie in the oven and the yummy smell of pie eventually filled the air. Icky smell conquered.

If you can't get to a pie, try boiling cinnamon sticks and clove in a pan with water.

I heard that putting a bowl of vinegar next to the stove when you cook will absorb the food ordors and it will not make the house smell like vinegar. -- I have not tried this one yet.

I have tried this one and it does work: When cutting onions, burn a candle near you on the counter. It will burn off the onion smell that usually will cause tears.

Good luck, M.

Hi L. ~ you can take the peelings of an orange and pturn your ut them on a cookiies sheet ~ 250 Degrees for about 20 minutes OR you can get a pot of water and add cinnamon sticks to it and let t bowl for awhile and then just turn it off and let it sit there ~ you can always add more water. Good Luck!

Well L. I guess I do things the hard way. I get out my trusty bucket of bleach water and start taking down curtains and washing them. I start washing things like the walls and doors and things that the smells might stick too. I sprinkle baking soda on my carpets and leave it sit for a few hours or just shampoo them if they are dirty. When I'm done with all that I do what my family call a freeze out and open all the doors and windows for about 15 mins (even in the dead of winter-you lose the house air heat but not the heat in the walls and the heater catches up fast to reheat things. I does not cost anymore than the kids running in and out all day. lol) When that is all done I then spray beds and funiture and such with oust. Light my glade scented oil candles and call it a day. the house is fresh and it sure does not hurt with controlling winter germs and bug and gets rid of the winter stuffy feeling in the house. I have lysol wall sprayers all through my house to help all winter long also. Call me a finatic about smells but thats just me. P.S. My family rarly gets sick during the winter so I must be doing something right. So my advise would be clean, freeze and smell it up again. lol happy holidays and good luck.

Candles and a good air purifier. I miss the summer when you could just open the windows:( But I have found that the air purifier helps and then light-scented candles like not-very-sweet florals (orchid, lily of the valley, etc...) or citris (I love grapefruit) work the best without going over board and making your house smell like you made cookies after frying bacon.

Try cooking onions right after the dinner or cooking is done. sauteed onions do remove orders. ACE hardware also has Fresh Wave products and several odor absorbing blocks that work great.

Try putting out some open bowls of vinegar. This works for cigarette smoke and paint fumes also. Good luck!!

(Oops - didn't see the other vinegar responses. Looks like vinegar is tried and true!)

We use a Lampe Berger, just like advice below. We light it about once a week and it really cleans the bacteria/ odors out of the air. We get a scent that we like and dilute it with unscented. My husband and I both repond to highly scented candles/ perfume/ air fresheners and this is something we can both live with. We love this product! Best of luck.

Do you have a vent/exhaust fan over your stove/range? Always, always, always turn it on prior to cooking anything and use it every time you cook.
