My daughter had her wisdom teeth out in august and has been very irregular ever since. I took her to the Drs on thursday, and the last 10 days before that she was put on a non dairy diet and took miralax every morning and exlax every night. That didnt seem to help at all. So on thursday her Dr. told us to give her miralax twice a day, exlax, and 2g of mineral oil twice a day... That isnt working out well either. Have any of you moms ever experienced this too with your teens? Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

Do you actually watch her take it? I have a lot of experience in the area and really am surprised that wouldn't do the trick. My teen daughter hates the taste and pours it down the sink if I am not watching. What is her diet like? Does she eat normally or have food issues?

first of all to see if its food related you need to be off of a particular food for at least 3 weeks. so 10 days isnt enough time at all to know what if anything that will help. also is she taking omega 3s/ fish oils regularly. how is her diet? taking a medication is a solution to the symptom not the problem. Id suggest you find the solution to the problem not the symptom. it is not normal. It may be as simple as looking to what she eats and improving that

If she is or was taking ibuprofin or vicodin that will definitely tie you up. I'd totally do a high fiber diet and drink lots of water throughout the day. As long as she is getting enough exercise, fiber and fluids she'll be back on track in no time without the aid of the laxatives. BUT if you really do want results asap I have found that Milk of Magnesia works the best. Drink the disignated amount on the label right before bedtime and I'm pretty sure she will go the next morning. ~~She might want to get up a little earlier if she has school that day just to make sure her bowels move before school.... sometimes it could take more than one trip to the bathroom for it to finish it's course.
ADD ON:
It might just be a coincedence that thi happed right around the same time as the wisdom teeth being pulled... she might have hormonal reasons for the change as well and will begin a new normal to her poop schedule. Every couple of days rather than every day is average for many.

I too had this problem once in my teens....a nurse pulled me off to the side and gave me this secret to which I have passed on to anybody that would listen. Stool softeners etc can be addcitive and are hard on the body. there is something that is very strong, but less harsh on the body & non addictive. magnesium citrate. You can get it at Walmart pharmacy area anround the fiber stool meds.. it is usually on the bottom shelf. Dr.;s had me doing enemas and all kinds of things, but just a bottle cleaned me out completely and my body reset itself after that. Follow instructions on bottle and stay near a bathroom. Best of luck. Oh, this is also the same thing hospitals use to clean people out fot tests & surgery!! Very cost effecient too as i think it is about $1.00!!

How much fiber is she eating? Is she eating regularly? I'd be sure that she's eating a high fiber diet. I'd also add Metamucil to her daily intake. It's a natural stool softener made up of psyllium seeds. Is she eating fruits and vegetables? They contain more fiber when eaten raw. Stay away from dairy products and bananas both of which can be constipating.
