I just got contacts for the first time ever yesterday. I know it will take some geting used to, but man this is annoying!! the "trial pair" is 2 different brands and the accuvue one is just fine, but the other one is really getting on my nerves. i think it is called a toric or something, not even sure how you spell it. but, i can feel it in my eye. not when i first put them in this morning but after a few hours I can start to feel it. and it is such an alien feeling to me to feel the air in my eyes all the time. I am 32 years old, have worn glasses since I was 7 years old. I guess I am just used to glasses, they kind of shield your eyes from the wind and apparently I was just used to it. even walking through the store I feel the "wind" in my eyes, it is irratating. I know I just have to get used to them, and that when I go back next week I'll tell them i dont like the one. How long did it take you to get used to them? did your eyes feel "tired" later in the afternoon at first? What was your experience?

What can I do next?

I have worn contacts since I was 15 as well as glasses (can't see at all, so I where glasses at night an in the morning, and on days that I just don't feel like contacts... which is pretty often lately).

Try wearing them just a couple of hours each day until you're used to them.

That tired feeling (I learned after dealing with it for a couple of years in my 20s) means those really aren't the best lenses for you. I switched to more breathable lenses and that feeling stopped!

Talk to your eye doctor. Don't be shy or feel like you're complaining. You may need to try two OTHER brands if those two aren't right.

Good luck.

I've worn contacts since I was 10 or 11. My dad just recently retired from optometry. I worked for him for several summers, so I have a bit of knowledge on the subject...

Toric is the type of contact that corrects astigmatism - not a brand - almost all brands have toric lenses. You very well may have two different brands, but I would question why.

Did the doctor just not have your prescription in the trial pair for the eye that needed the toric lens? Or is he/she planning on putting you in two different brands permanently?

Also, I will assume that the doctor or his assistant taught you how to place the toric in your eye correctly. There is a top and bottom to toric lenses. If they did not give you specific directions about how to place the toric lens in your eye, then that could explain why you're always feeling it - it's not sitting on your eye correctly. It could also be "turning" on your eye throughout the day if they don't fit well enough.

The Acuvue Oasys toric lenses have single "dashes" on the top and bottom. Those dashes should be vertical when you place the contact in your eye. Other brands/lenses have three dashes that look sort of like sunbursts on the right and left side of the lens, and those should be horizontal when you place those on your eyes. Different brands have different marks and different ways of indicating how the toric lens should be worn.

Also, this is why they have the trial lenses - to make sure they fit and you can function with them before they finalize the prescription and before you spend a lot of money on contacts you can't wear.

Call your doctor. Tell him what's going on. He may tell you that you still are in the adjustment period, but I would bet he's going to have you come in.

Oh - and yes, your eyes will feel tired later in the day. Most doctors will have you start out wearing them for only a short amount of time each day and then extend the time either each day or every few days until you're wearing them a full day.

It's starting to sound like your doctor or his assistant didn't give you the necessary information to be successful adapting to these...

I got contacts for the first time about 10 months ago when I turned 30. I have been wearing glasses since I was four so I'm in a similar situation. What I found was in the beginning I could definitely tell when it was time to take them out. I would notice that my eyes would get blurry and I would have to blink more to clear my vision when it got close to the 16 hours wear time (recommended - with 8 hours out). I started with the Accuvue Oasys and they have been great. It it wasn't for the fact that I have to remove them I wouldn't even know I had them in. I realized one thing about being outside: I have to wear sunglasses! Not optional anymore. I noticed that the one thing my glasses did that my contact do not is cut the glare on the road or in general when I'm outside. I have to wear the sunglasses even on overcast days. It did take some adjusting because it especially would dry my eyes out, In the beginning I used Blink eye drops a few times a day and within a few weeks I didn't even notice it anymore. I love my contacts and I'm so glad I made the decision to go that route.

I love my contacts. I really love that you can peel an onion and you wont cry, it's awesome. I wear Accuvue and they are really comfortable. Keep a little bottle of wetting solution for later in the day if your eyes feel tired or dry, it really helps to perk them back up. The hardest thing I had to endure with contacts was learing how to put them in and take them out, but after a few weeks you will be a pro.

I got my first contacts at 14, having worn glasses since 6 years old. Back then they didn't have disposable lenses, but the type you replace every year or two. When I fort got them I remember my doctor made me get used to them slowly, increasing the amount you wear them slowly by an hour every few days. That may help you if getting used to them even though is is not required with modern lenses.
The toric lens may be more irritating because they tend to bemore rigid as they correct a mistake in the way the surface of your eye is shaped. I have slight astigmatism in one eye but instead of resorting to a toric lens my doc overcorrects that eye slightly and this works for me... something you may consider bringing up with you doctor if you don't like the torrid lens.

Also even though I have been wearing them for more than 20 years, I rarely wear them for more than 8 hours at a time, that's when my eyes get tired and they are no longer comfortable. I know many people don't have any issues even wearing them overnight, but that is just not for me.
Good luck.

I have been wearing contacts for almost 20 years... since I was a kid, so it is very second nature to me! But, I do get a pair every now and then that is uncomfortable. I also use the accuvue advance and it seems to be the best brand for me moisture and comfort wise, so it sounds like that is the best for you too.

When you first wear them, only do a few hours a day and then add more time to let your eyes get used to them. Be sure you rinse them very well and use new solution each time. I was using the cheap store brand solution, then went back to my regular one b/c the cheap brands didn't clean as well and would sometimes burn.

If I am at the computer too long at night or something, yes, my eyes tend to feel tired by the end of the day.
