Contact Lens Exams? Any Recommendations?

I am overdue for my contact lens exam, and I know my prescription has changed. I dont have vision insurance so I need an affordable place to go. Any recommendations? I know walmart/Sams/Costco offer that but have no idea how good they are. I usually order my lenses online, so I really just need a decent priced exam. Most places that do exams for glasses charge alot more for contacts...and I cant wear glasses daily. Looking for somewhere close to McKinney/Frisco/Allen/Plano. Thanks!

So What Happened?

I ended up going to walmart in Plano as suggested here and it was great! I felt he was really thorough and did a good job checking everything. I have found the cheapest place to order contacts online though to be lensworld.com. I have used them a few times and they are fast, accurate and always email me discounts.

I just went to Dr. Vu at the Plano Wal-Mart and he was great! I really liked him and will go back to him next time.

However, I do NOT recommend buying contacts through Wal-Mart's website. I will pay the little bit extra next time and buy through 1-800 CONTACTS. Wal-Mart didn't get my order to me on time...didn't know where my contacts were when I called. All in all, they caused me more stress than the $20 or so I saved was worth. I needed the contacts on time as I was leaving on a cruise and they didn't get them in until the day before I left when they were promised a week earlier. Calling customer service just frustrated me as they didn't know as much as I did! Plus, I had gotten e-mails from them contradicting each other. I will NEVER use Wal-Mart to buy contacts from again, but I WILL go back to Dr. Vu!

If you have medical insurance you can go to any ophthalmologists(M.D.) for an eye exam, just as long you have a valid complaint. For example, your eyes feel itchy/red sometimes. They can do an eye examination and file with your medical insurance and code it eyes allergy,etc..Alot of people don't know this regarding their medical insurance. If you can bring in your contact lens rx (from previous doctor)or still have the boxes with the rx on it-most eye place can write a contact lens rx for you for like 50 bucks...So, 50 bucks plus your insurance co-pay/percentage(this include a good exam, glasses rx, and contact lens rx)If you don't or can't get your contacts lens info and go to a new doctor-this is where they charge you that large sum called the fitting fee for contacts, even though you already know how to put it in and remove them..Hope this will help...If you don't have medical insurance, then Wal-Mart is pretty ok for pricing..

I had a very good experience with Mary Leazure at Modern Family Vision in Allen (in the Tom Thumb shopping center at McDermott and 75). I picked her because her daughter goes to daycare with mine and because she was part of my insurance plan (Superior). She and her staff were very efficient and courteous.

J., Dr. Vu in the Plano Walmart off of 75 south was very nice, I was actually impressed. The exam wa $80, but he gives you a few contacts to get you by. I also just buy online, but he told me if you ordered from Walmart, it was about $40-60 cheaper. Good luck!

I really like Pinnacle Eye Associates in McKinney. They are in the Albertsons shopping center on Virginia and Stonebridge. Dr. Alfieri sees our whole family. She has an incredible personality, wonderful to go see. I dont know about her cost since we are covered by insurance but I would definitely ask to see what her prices are. www.pinnacleeye.net

Good Luck

We use Dr. Mike Phillips at Sears Optical in Collin Creek Mall. He was the cheapest I found when I was looking several years ago without vision insurance. My husband and I both go to him and really like him (hubby has contacts; I have glasses)I don't have his number handy, but you can find it in the phone book.
