We had this problem too and it wasn't from an unhealthy diet.. my daughter drank more than 64 oz of water daily and ate tons of fruits and veggies (specifically apples and grapes) which are supposed to help with going. We had an x-ray done as well because her belly protruded and they saw that she was full of poop, her colon was backed up. We'd done probiotics, prune juice, cod liver oil, metamucil (pink lemondae flavor) and nothing worked... she was put on miralax and has been on it for the past 2 years and her body is soooooo dependent on it, if she misses a dose we pay BIG-time! Recently, we went to a chinese herbalist in China town Dr. Lisa Lau and she gave us some children's tea called "seven herbal tea drink" and for the past 2 weeks she hasn't had her doses of miralax, this tea seems to be working wonders, she has been going 2-3 times daily and she doesn't go like that with the miralax. Hope this helps. I hate to see children in that pain.

If you have not taken her to the doctor yet, I think now is the time to go. She could have something more serious like a bowl obstruction. You wouldn't want this to suddenly turn into something much worse. And they may be able to give her a prescription or suggest what to do.

You pretty much answered your own question. Unhealthy diet is usually the cause of constipation. She is still young enough to fix this. She will eat fruits and vegetables if you stop feeding all the other garbage, and or sweets. Experiment with different things and don't give up. Sometimes it takes several tries to get a toddler to accept new foods. You don't want to set her up for a lifetime of health problems when you can change this now. Also try kiwi, very high in fiber, oatmeal, popcorn. Lots of water, no pop.

We have this problem all the time and our child eats TONS of fruits, veggies! After discussing this on-going issue with our pediatrician we have come up with a plan to give our child a very small amount of miralax daily. It really works. You can also use more magnesium (check with your doctor for amount with your toddler). Avoid too much cow's milk and cow's milk products. Stick with whole grains. If you need relief for your little one, prune juice does work.

Since enimas and suppostiories don't work and shw won't eat the prunes needed to help from the inside. Take her to the doctor. It is not good to go for a week without a BM.

Our Daughter when she was 3 had the same problem. Our daughter stopped eatting and her tummy hurt since she refused to go since she was scared that it hurts. The Doctor told us to put her on Miralax. The first time she went she screamed in pain since it was so hard. But once the Miralax set in it was soft, and she kept going since she was so backed up. She realized that pooping doesn't have to hurt. We kept her on it for three months and started weening her a little at a time until she didn't need it anymore. Once you get them to go everyday or every other day to the bathroom the body will fix itself to where you won't become dependent on Miralax. The reason your greatgranddaughter stomach hurts is because she hasn't had bowel movements and it can only go back into her stomach. But go to the Doctor to see what else can be done because it might be something more.

My 15 months old was the same way. She cried when she tried to go and was in real pain. Her dr told me to give her 1T spoon of miralax. I give her a little bit more than 1tbs but less than 1T (was afraid it was too much) and she goes every day now without crying anymore (I am still giving her miraLAX in her 1st morning milk).
Maybe you could give her 1T first time and than less. I am very happy with miralax. And by the way print the coupons from the web before you purchase it! :)

Your granddaughter first poop will probably be really hard. They learn to hold when it hurts to go. Good luck!

butt cheek circles. you massage her tush away from midline on both sides.

so like doing a figure 8, or an infinity sign on her butt cheeks with firm pressure.

I would try massaging her tummy from left to right with the heel of your hand. Then go in the opposite direction (right to left) a little bit lower on her tummy before giving an enima. Also, if she is eating anything, I would puree it before giving it to her. Finally, I would continue with the fruit offerings, because 1 week is a long time not to have a bowel movement,

Please read this article. This doctor is the best pediatrician, and writer, possibly in the country (and it doesn't hurt that I knew him when he was still in high school!) His own child suffered from severe constipation.
