My 6 month old gets constipated every once in a while when I add/try something new to his diet. I tried rice cereal a couple different times in different quantities and he got constipated so I stopped that. He has been only breastfed for five months and then I added solid foods (veggies and fruits). He has done great on that. I am introducing formula because I am going to start weaning. I am going very slow. I think the formula is making him constipated as well. I have been mixing 3 oz formula with 4-5 oz breast milk in two of his bottles a day. I don't want to stop this because I'm ready to stop breastfeeding. What baby fruits/food make the stools more loose besides prunes and pears? I just want to be able to offer him a variety of different foods, keep his bm's regular, and continue with the formula. Please help

What can I do next?

What kind of formula are you using? If it's soy, we had the same problem. Try 2 oz water with 1 tsp Karo syrup, or give a tiny bit of apple/prune juice...it will do wonders! When I say tiny, I mean like 1 oz to 2 oz water...otherwise, you will have a bit of a mess, but it's better than baby being constipated. Good luck!

I used to give my son the Blueberry Buckle Gerber baby food and that seemed to help also. My son is now almost two and he still cannot drink cow's milk. Something in the milk protein constipates him. When investigating that with his pediatrician,we also found out he was allergic to egg whites. Allergies can contribute to constipation problems also. you may want to have him allergy tested at some point.

L.,
You're right formula may constipate. I would give her prunes (baby food). They are very sweet the the babies love them. They are a hoot to serve because their faces get soooo messy. Anyway, try that and see if it helps. You'll have to play with how many times a week you give it to her. She may need it only once a week or she may need it every other day.

We used baby food plums. They are a bit lighter than the prunes. Also we found apple juice really cleared the system out! Also, dark Karo syrup in her formula. That was per the doc...unfortunatly I don't recall the exact amount, but it seems like it was maybe 2 Tablespoons a bottle. Check with your doctor or on-line.

anything with a P typically losens bowels- peaches, prunes plums, peas etc.. barley can be helpful as well- foods that are binding- rice, potato, pasta, bananas and applesauce. to help get bowels moving you can use a themometer and lubricate it and insert that into the rectum that can get things moving. good luck- children are pretty constipated until after the age of 3!

My son also has constipation issues, but he didn't develop them until just before his 2nd birthday, which meant that mineral oil was an option for us. For the younger babies, the tried and true solution is prunes, either in the milk or from the spoon. If you're worried about him getting tired of the taste, there are prune combos, like prune-cherry. Has your doctor suggested switching to a soy-based formula? That may also help.

Hi. Been there with my two youngest and around the same age. I was breast feeding as well as starting the formula because my supply could not keep up with their demand. What i use to do was instead of mixing the rice cereal with milk( formula or breast ) i would mix it with the gerber prune juice and a little apple juice. I would do that twice in the day and give them 1 bottle of the remaining prune juice with water, so a half and half combination. And there are combinations of flavored baby prune juices like cherry-prune, apple-prune or plain prune. Also i started giving baby yo (yogurt ) to kind of help keep them regular especially since i was introducing them to food. It helped alot!!!!!!!!. It is also a great savior for those times that they seem to get the "hershey squirts" diarrhea. It would stop it right away.in worse case scenario you can get infant glycerin suppositories at walgreens and that will help within the hour (but use that at last resort because it is an exit not an entrance so it might be pretty uncomfortable :)) you can alsio try dark karo syrup but check with you pediatrician first on that!!!!! Best of luck and hope everyhting "comes out" ok :) !!!!!!!!
