Constipation in Toddler or Something Else?

My 3 1/2 year old daughter, who has been potty trained since 18 months old, has started popping in her panties. The past few months she has had accidents and wet her panties. I chalked it up to waiting too long because she was playing. Well for a month or so now she has been pooping in her panties. Not a lot just a little. She will do it and cry because she did and call for me. Usually just a little bit, I ask her if she needs to go to the potty and she says not and screams if I try to get her to just sit on it to try and go. So we clean up and then she usually does it again within a hour. I really think she needs to go but is holding it. I know she sometimes had painful BMs because she will have a little blood when I wipe her. She is very petite for her age, 28 lbs., and a very picky eater, nothing green. So I am thinking I need to add soemthing to her diet to help. But what and should I use an over the counter med to help for awhile? I think it hurts and so she is holding it then can't control it.
Any advise is welcome. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Well after a horrible experience and trying some new things we went to the doctor. She told us to use Miralax and it has worked great. But you are not to use it for more than a week and I am going to try the Pear juice/extract. You should had seen her poor little self the first tiem she went and it didn't hurt. She was so happy. I think the Miralax is is the way to go til we can get her on the juice and see if it helps.
Thanks to all!

Doesn't have to be meds. Oatmeal in the morning might help. Or add corn syrup to her bottle.
If she is having "accidents" so often, you need to go back and potty train again.

My daughter was "afraid of the plop". I begged, screamed, bribed, praised - ery you name it, we couldn't move past this. She would pee in the potty, clean up, pull her pants up, walk away and do #2 in her pants. We babysat someone's betta fish while they were on vacation. My daughter was all over it and very sad when the fishy went home. I made a deal with her that if she could uses the potty for everything for 1 week - she could pick out the betta fish of her dreams! It worked perfectly. I recently saw a Dr. Phil episode where some parents were having the same issue. They had a truck in a package on a shelf above the potty - and told their boy that he could have it if he would do #2 in the potty. Dr. Phil said that they were close - but they had to find "his price" and bribe (my word) or praise (Dr. Phil's word) him with something that he wanted more. My daughter's "price" was a betta fish. Good luck

There is an amzing prduct called Miralax. Please, please, please call her doctor to get advice on how much to give her based on age and weight. They can also give you advice on what types of foods to add to her diet and cut back on, plus some other tips to help her to "go". The blood is probably from a fissure, which is a small tear in the rectum from pushing out a hard poop. They may give you some advice on how to keep the fissure clean and help it to heal. PLEASE call her doctor right away. We didn't know and let something similar go for far too long with my daughter. When you see a doctor cringe, you know it's not good! She had 2 fissures, and she had gotten to the point where she was holding it in for so long that her colon expanded/stretched, which made her poops bigger, which made it even more painful to go... then once we used the Miralax to soften it, it was difficult for her to hold it in because of the stretched out colon.

As much fluids as you can get down her, and probiotics- Simplexity has the best I've used, and at her age I'd recommend their bifidus.
Probably is the pain that is causing the problem, this and fluids should do the trick, if not check with the Int'l Chiropractic Pediatric Assn. I have had little ones whose moms brought extra diapers because they knew they'd have to change them a few times after the adjustment.
best, k

After we experienced a 30 minutes ordeal of our 3 yr old crying and rolling all over the floor trying to poop one time, then finally passing out after the ordeal was over....we added PLUM SWEET juice to her diet. She LOVED it and it helped SOOO MUCH!! They have a less sugar version too....it's just like juice, not thick at all. Doesn't taste bad either! Good for the entire family. Good Luck!

Pear nectar. It sweet and works better than prunes or prune juice, which are sometimes hard to stomache because they are sooooo sweet and thick, yuck. I promise a 4 oz glass will cure the problem.

Hi T.!
My daughter turned 4 in September and we've been fighting with peds ever since she was a tiny baby about this. She always had rock hard bms and she was scream her head off, get on all fours and rock, do whatever she had to do to get it out. It was HORRIBLE. I even went to the ER with her 2 times for this reason. FINALLY I demanded to see a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. He was WONDERFUL! We've been on Miralax and it really does work wonders! It works best if it's given in clear liquids but I give it to my daughter in her choc milk at bedtime. You'll have to get with her dr. on the dossage. We had to play with it to get it just right. At first it was WAYYYYYYYYYYY too much, then not enough but FINALLY got it perfect and she is going on a regular basis and before it was more like 1 time a week. I really hope this helps!

I would try putting her on Juice Plus. We all need to feed our body what it needs and that is fruits and veggies. In Juice Plus you can get 17 different types of fruits and veggies. It will detox the body and start making the right steps to a healther life.
Please visit this site. When you get on this site click on "watch the video" under the bottles. To see a few more wonderful videos go to "Related Info" at the top of the website. The video with the Doctors is GREAT! Dr. Sears and his whole family support Juice Plus 100%.

They also have wonderful tasteing chewables for children to eat.
My WHOLE family takes Juice Plus and we believe in it 100%. The best thing for us is really being able to see how it has changed our health.

Luis is my husband, please feel free to contact me through mamasource or my husband through this website if you have any questions.

P.S. When was the last time you went to the doctors office and had the Dr. say to you " I believe that if you eat more fruits and veggies you will feel much better". ?

Add Organic Pear juice to her diet. Pear balances the acid in the gut. Too much acid or not enough causes stomach and bowel problems in all ages. Pear juice will help unconstipate you and also will help dry up diarrhea. You can find it at Publix (organic section) or at Golden Almond healthfood store on Racetrack. Organic is important as it affects how it is processed. You don't get the important minerals and vitamins from grocery store shelf juices. They have too much sugar as well which can cause constipation. (Even too much natural sugar is bad for your system). I recommend taking her to the doctor as well since what is already in her intestines may honestly be "too big" to come out and could cause a perferation which could be life threatening. The doctor can simply push around on her tummy to find out if this is the case.

Wow! I am SO glad to hear I am not the only one dealing with this!! My 3 1/2 yr old little boy has been doing the EXACT same thing! He used to do it when first learning to go poopy on the potty and within the last couple of months started again. I too thought that it was constipation and gave him a natural children's laxative. It was AWFUL! He was crying in agony and pooping every few minutes for several hours. I will NEVER do it again. I have no idea why he does it and have been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. I have asked him as many ways possible to try to understand. He will actually hide to go in his pants. But, then gets so grossed out he has actually thrown up from looking down at it. The only thing I can think of is instant gratification... maybe he just doesn't want to take the time out to go to the potty. As a matter of fact last night I could tell he was holding it and refused to go to the potty everytime I asked I put him in the bath and he starts screaming, "Mommy my poopy's coming out!" And he pooped in the bath. So, I guess he holds it so long it becomes involuntary?? I just don't know how to get him to just go to the potty. *sigh*

This happened to my niece. She became afraid of going potty on the toilet because of a couple of painful ones. She associated the pain with the toilet and would hold it for DAYS. My sister would get an over the counter suppository and she would go within 15 minutes. This holding it and getting a rock hard stomach went on for a couple of months. The only thing that ended up breaking her of it was she had loose stool one time and my mom put her on the potty and before she could protest and scream she was going. She ran to my sister and said "Mommy, Mommy I went potty on the toilet and it didn't hurt!" Check with your doctor on the type of suppositories you could use and good luck!

Try apples, apple sauce, raisins, prunes, whole grain versus white bread and cracker products. Explain to her that what she eats is why she has painful poops. Eliminate or decrease cheese consumption. If she likes beans in any form, maybe hummus dip, or bean dip, or bean burritos, encourage her to eat a lot of those. Basically, eating just cheese and bread are her enemies. also, cold beverages slow down circulation to digestive organs. Have her drink a warm beverage sometimes. My daughter likes sleepytime tea from celestial Seasonbins. How about warm soups? Exercise helps, like walking and running. Get those hips moving. Dancing?

We have the same exact problem with my 4 year old.....Started about 6 months ago, she had been potty trained since she was 2 and she started peeing in her pants. I didnt really think much of it, but she was also constipated( usually has a bm every 2-4 days and it is ALWAYS rock hard), the dr said that having accidents is a side effect of being constipated. They put her on Miralax, whic does make her go.....TOO much. She started pooping when she would pass gas, so we took her off of it. We are still having problems with this. Changed her diet, giving her more water, more fruits, more veggies, giving her vitamens. Nothing has helped......so if you find something that works....let me know!;)

Sunshine Heroes Omega 3 with DHA
Omega 3 with DHA is a uniquely formulated children's supplement that provides omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are key building blocks in every cell in the body and benefit the brain, eyes and central nervous sytem. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are two essential fatty acids recognized for their health benefits in all life stages and are essential components as the body grows and develops.

"I need strong bones!"
Sunshine Heroes Calcium Plus D3
Maintaining adequate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence is necessary for the development of peak bone mass. Calcium can be absorbed by the body efficiently only when vitamin D is present. The American Acedemy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently doubled its recommendation for the miniumu amount of vitamin D that children should get daily. The new guidelines recommend at least 400 international units per day. Most children don't drink enough milk (four 8 oz glasses) to provide adequate levels of vitamin D. Each serving of Calcium Plus D3 provides 300mg of calcium, equivalent to an 8 oz serving of milk; 300 IU of vitamin D3, the most bioactive form of vitamin D; and 140 mg of phosphorus, which works closely with calcium to build strong bones and teeth.

"But I don't want to eat my veggies!"
Sunshine Heroes Whole Foods Antioxidant
Because modern diets often lack sufficient amounts of fruits, vegtables and other whole foods, they are generally low in the essential nutrients and antioxidants needed for optimium health. The National Cancer Institute recommends eating at least 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Whole Foods Antioxidant provides the antioxidant power of two average servings of fruits or vegetables (based on ORAC value). In addition to antioxidants and nutrients, Whole Foods Antioxidant soft chews provide added vitamins A, E, and C for extra protection and nutritional support.

"When I eat that, my tummy hurts."
Sunshine Heroes Whole Foods Papayazyme
Digestive enzymes are essential to proper digestion. Enzymes break down foods into nutrients that can be absorbed and used to build all body systems. Three main categories of digestive enzymes exist: 1) proteolytic enzymes, which digest protein, 2) amylases for carbohydrate digestion, and 3) lipases for fat digestion. Like their parents, most children do not eat enough raw foods and can therefore benefit from digestive enzyme supplementaion. Whole Food Papayazyme combines pineapple and papaya fruits - whole food sources of digestive enzymes - and is fortified with additional digestive enzymes, for healthy digestions of most food types. Whole Foods Papayazyme provides digestive enzymes at levels that are safe for chewing and gentle enough for children.

We resolved recurring constipation with magnesium (research the amounts, etc. for yourself and with a trusted HCP), probiotics (antibiotics destroyed good gut flora) and a digestive enzyme (helps break down food). We also watch sugar intake and try to keep our diet healthy.

I believe my children's issues in this area originally stemmed from over-vaccination and too many antibiotics.

I refuse to believe that children should routinely be placed on prescription constipation meds. That is not a normal rite of childhood imho. It is also not normal to be chronically constipated, and it seems that I hear about it in children everywhere I go now. No doubt the mainstream American diet plays a major role too (over-processed and stripped of fiber and vital nutrients).

I am not a health care professional - this is what I have learned with my own children. Good luck to you and your family.

I would take her to the Doctor! She may have a blockage, even if it's just poop. That is what happened to my five year old. She complained about her stomach hurting, especially when she ate. Then she started wetting herself . Often she would go potty, then almost immediately loose bladder control. I thought she had a bladder infection, but we ended up needing a stool softener. The best we found was Myralax. Check with your Dr. on the dosage. She had half a lid mixed into juice or water every night for almost three months and now she does not need anything. It is not addictive nor is it a stimulant. It works by adding water to the bowls. If you go online to their site you can print out a coupon. I hope this helps.
