Constipation in Newborn - Denver,CO

My daughter is about 3 months old and is constipated for the first time. We have her on formula and has been doing very well with it. Its been 3-4 days now and she had a little poop this morning but it was hard and clumpy also not much there. I called our doctor to see if there is something we can give her...Any advise would be great! She is not in any pain but if she doesn't have a regular bowl movement soon I'm afraid she will be.

Thanks for your help... New Mom - Denver, CO

I had the same problem with my son, who is now 14 months old. His pediatrician recommended putting a small amount of Karo Light Corn Syrup in his bottle, along with the formula. It works! And still does ~ I just had to put a little in his sippy cup last night to help get things "moving" again :) Just make sure to use the light syrup - should be clear or slightly yellow in color.

Good luck!

If I could give you any advice, I've always been told NOT to use corn syurp...Never. I don't know what you could give a baby so young but they wont classify a baby as constipated unless its been longer then 1 week. I know its hard to wait and see but I've never had anyone constipated in the family. I've always just let nature do its thing.

Good luck!

Just like Paula H., our pediatrician recommended 1 teaspoon of light corn syrup in the bottle, (if you're bottle feeding).

Hi N.,
you can safely add a tea blend of Chamomile and Catnip as the water part to the formula. Both of these herbs support healthy digestion, and reduce cramping, bloating, and gas associated with constipation.
Feel free to come by my herbal medicine store and clinic to pick up the herbs and to gather more information. Holistic Pathways ###-###-####. 423 East Alameda Ave. Denver, CO 80209
