Hi mom's,

My 17 month old has had problems in the past with constipation. The poor baby will push and push to the point she's crying, but nothing comes out or if it does come out she’s sobbing because it hurt her so bad and she doesn’t want to be held for fear that your going to be anywhere near her bottom. I asked my pediatrician and he said that she's fine, it happens, and not to worry too much about it. I then asked the pharmacist if there was anything I could do for her, and he suggested giving her a spoon full of Karo syrup, I bought the clear kind, mixed with warm water. The Karo syrup in water, mixed with a change in diet seemed to work for a bit. This past weekend she was constipated again and I felt so bad for her, but I didn’t know of anything I could do for her. We gave her juice, a warm bath, the Karo in water, beans, yogurt, ect. Her belly was hard and the more she pushed the redder her bottom got. Then within a 24 hour period she finally went to the bathroom, which is a relief but those previous 24 hours were horrible. Does anyone else have this problem with their Toddler? Does anyone have any other advice on how I can help when she gets constipated like that? Her “big jobs” are like an adult. I’m not giving her anything that is too hard for her to digest, I think. Thanks so much for your help.

Take care
T.

the few times my son got this way i would give him a little orange juice. i would take him a warm bath and when he got out and i would give him a complete body massage. there are some pressure points in his body like his feet that help. once i gave him a really good massage for at least ten minutes he went to the bathroom with no problem and the constipation went completely away.

I haven't had this problem but my son absolutely loves raisins. He eats them everyday. They keep him very regular. If she won't eat plain raisins try the yogurt covered raisins (he loves those too). My friend's baby had this problem and he grew out of it. I always felt so sorry for him too. Hope you find something that works.

Unfortunately this happens. My 7 yr old had this very problem as a baby. He did grow out of it, as he got older. I tried prune juice as well as apple juice with mine and it didn't seem to work as well as pear juice. You can find pear juice from Gerber in the baby food section of Walmart. I hate to say this, but it could also be a problem of an impaction. An impaction is when a ball is stuck in the colon and is blocking everything solid from exiting. Anything that does come out is pretty watery cause it is going around the ball. You need to talk to your Pedi and ask him to chk for this. All he would have to do is press his fingers on the lower abdomen and see if it is harder there. One day my ex and I took our son over to my ex's grandmother's house. She is a registered nurse and noticed our son was screaming alot and having trouble going to the bathroom. He was straining way to hard. She chkd his abdomen and told us it was an impaction. She corrected the problem for us and he was okay and went straight to sleep.

i always used prune juice with my kids & it worked every time, i would dilute it half juice & half water. (also i would buy the kind in single serving cans so it wouldnt waste, or buy a bottle & then freeze single servings in breastmilk bags (also do this with pedialyte if you have extra)) also make sure she is getting plenty of water to drink on a daily basis, if she wont drink plain water try using just a little crystal light to give it some flavor (not even a full serving just like a half a teaspoon or so).
also you mentioned that you gave her beans & yogurt, but in my experience beans are hard on the tummy & even yogurt (dairy) for young children can make them constipated. (at least my kids)

My son has been like this since i can remeber. We gave hime a teaspoon of mineral oil every day for 4 weeks. and now only when he hits a "rough patch". It work immedantly and doesn't hurt their stomach. I hope this helps some, and good luck.

I second the Miralax. My son has been on it for awhile now (before it became over the counter). He had the same problems as your daughter and he was impacted...we ended up in the ER after his pedi had has get an x-ray. The reason she has "big jobs" may be that her colon has been stretched to accomodate the times she held it for long periods. It is painful and then they don't want to go and hold it for a long time. It is a vicious circle. Miralax is not a stimulant (and not addictive according to the pedi, the pedi GI and websites I have found). It is a stool softener and since we have been on it there have been no problems. His 'nig jobs' are not so big anymore so the pedi GI feels like his colon is going back to its regular size, but it does take time. Also, my son loves green beans, brown rice, broccoli and that all seems to help. Good Luck!

My son also has this problem. Too much dairy seems to be the cause. My pedi recomended pear juice when he was younger and now she says fibersure is fine for him. He also sees a GI pedi, who says the fiber product is fine if it works, but if not he needs Miralax (its over the counter). I would talk to your doctor about this as it was recomended by the GI. We are just starting Miralax. Also, LOTS of water. Dehydration is another cause of constipation. I have even used pedilyte to cause a bowl movement, however I don't think you should do this all the time. I also feed my son foods like apricots. The ones in individual packages tend to be soft. Limit the dairy. It is a big cause. No more than 16oz of milk a day and I believe my pedi said 12oz is enough. My son loves his milk better than food so this is hard for us, but makes a huge difference. Good luck with this. I know it is so hard to watch your child staining for 24 hours for an adult size bm.

Make sure you talk with her pedi first. However, my Emily has been on Miralax since she was 7 months old, Emily will be 4 in December. Emily has many other medical issues, but Miralax is a wonder. We used to add it to her bottle, now it is with her yogurt or applesauce in the a.m. It takes most of the day to work with our cramping or sudden urges. You have to use it daily, preferably in the a.m. to make things easier but it does work and well. We did try several other medications and homeopathic remedies but this worked the best. Emily's website is http://www dot caringbridge dot com click on visit type in emily Best of luck. C.
