Constipation - Columbiaville, MI

I was wondering if anybody out there has had problems with their toddler and constipation? My grandson Zachary loves milk but it seems if he drinks it on a regular basis he can't go.The doctor suggested taking him off milk all together and for two weeks he went just fine no problems. We tried soy milk because we heard it might be the milk proteins giving him a hard time, that helped a little but he can still only have a small glass once a day or some on his cereal. He eats everything (I mean everything) so I can't imagine it is his diet. If you girls have any ideas I love to hear them.
Thank you

Hi J.,

My son has been battling with constipation as early as when I stopped nursing him at 9 months. He just turned 6 and we are still trying to keep it under control. I find that a glass of prune juice a day with dinner along with a high fiber low dairy diet keeps him going every few days. Too much milk, cheese, yogurts will make him more constipated. Soy milk is not good either because I asked my doctor about that and she told me there is too much fiber in the soy milk and too much of the soy milk fiber could cause constipation also. You will have to limit your sons consumption of dairy and try to get him to eat veggies and whole grain breads and snacks. Most importantly keep him away from bananas..they are the worst. I let my son have milk in his cereal or oatmeal once a day and thats all the milk he gets that day. Hope this helps.. feel free to email me if you have any questions as I've dealt with this for 5 years now!! :)

Make sure he eats lots of fresh and dried fruit. Prunes are actually tasty. That might help keep him regular.

Lots of us don't do well w/ dairy. My daughter drinks rice milk, but there are a lot of other kinds (oat, hemp, almond). I give my daughter 1/2 an acidolphulus, and push more water.
You'll find what balance he needs, it just takes a bit of time.

i have had years of issues with this and I have to say, the best thing is to get on yahoo and search the groups. They have some very specific ones. Everytime I face an issue, I find a group on there that is dealing with it and I join for as long as I need the input. Good luck!
