My husband has been approached by a recruiter for a position in Long Island. Not somewhere on my radar to move since I'm a suburban southern girl at heart, I currently live in Texas and love it, but it would double his base salary and there will most likely be commission on top of that - so we have to consider it.
Any Mama's here from Long Island or familiar with the area? The job is in Ronkonkowa and we've been looking at the Patchogue area for housing. I'm doing some online research, of course, but would love to hear from Moms who lived there or have family/friends there. What are the positives? What are the negatives? How different are the people/pace of life from Texas? What are schools like? What are good neighborhoods? Would you move back if you could?
Any info anyone can give me would be appreciated! I've never even been to New York, heck I've never been farther east than Texas, so this is a whole new ball game for me!
Completely different world than Texas. Positives - proximity to NYC, LOTS to do, great beaches (but they are crowded), faster pace, shopping, did I say proximity to NYC?. Downside - more $$ to live, traffic, faster pace.
you'd have to consider that its more expensive to live in NY too. It depends what kids of lifestyle you want, you may end up with the same extra cash, but if you want to live near a big city it would be ideal
Okay, I had to chuckle just a teeny bit about throwing a Texan into 'The Island Jungle'... it's really not that bad ;) People talk a lot faster and probably, to Texas standards, not as friendly, BUT I'm unfamiliar with the exact area you're talking about.
I'm from northern New Jersey and now live in Richmond, VA, and Richmonders are damn proud to be from the south. Holy Confederacy Batman [snicker] ;) I can't say 'you guys' without getting a group response of 'ya'll!!'
Think of the normal stereotypes for the area you're in now. Now think about how much of that is true, and how much is untrue. Same applies to the NY stereotypes. Like most people think NY is all city... NY actually has some GORGEOUS countrysides!!
It's definitely a new ball park, don't get me wrong, but if anything the experience will make you more open minded and well rounded! It's going to be an adventure, that's for sure :)
Born and raised there! We have been in Keller for five years. Long Island is very different...fast pasted, lost of shopping and restaurants, expensive and crowded! It will be an adjustment for sure! My least favorite part of LI is the people...it's like Southlake but ten times worse! Most people who can afford to live in LI have money and even if they don't you will think they do...lots of jewlery, furs, and fancy cars. Just a suggestion but...u may want to go onto a cost of living website and figure out if it's worth it. My hubby, like yours was offered a job and relo package to move back East. When we calculated the cost of living even with a huge salary increase...it wasn't worth it. I love TX and don't think I could go back! Also...the weather...u think it's cold today...u haven't seen ANYTHING yet! On a positive note u would b close to the City....lots to do there and the Italian food is AWESOME! I hope you don't mind me being so blunt but I would want to know the honest truth! Good luck!
