Hi B.,
I'm not sure if it helps or not, but with all of my kids I have seen congestion in the first few months. My doc has attributed most of to the fact that they are still clearing amniotic fluid out of their lungs, and they don't have the sense to cough... they're pretty sedentary and don't give their lungs the workout they need to expel it effectively. I'm not quite sure when it went away to be honest... but it did.
My son sounded like a little bulldog for a while there.
It is possible your baby has a spring cold... use a little saline nasal spray, probably just one drop in each nostril, gently squeeze the nostrils a little to soak the boogers so it doesn't just run down his throat, then wait a few minutes and use the bulb to suck out the boogers. he is likely to choke on the phlegm a bit if it's thick.. he doesn't know how to manage it, swallow it, spit it out or cough to clear it thru his throat :( poor guy :( post nasal drip can cause some stomach upset for me so he might be having some appetite loss from it.
unfortunately, there are no medicines to give your son at his age...
So, while I don't know that my advice will help with your frustration and heartbreak while you little man is dealing with this, I can say you're not alone :) I have also heard that infants can't have allergies,... but it makes no sense to me... i mean, if there are irritants in the air (pollen), why do they think it doesn't affect them? I think it's possible he could be having issues with pollen or seasonal type irritants... though I've read it's not the case... i dunno...who am i? I'm no doctor, just doing the best I can with the logic life experience has given me thus far, and all the reading a mom can do with her limited time :)
p.s. my son is currently dealing with a little head cold right now... so I feel your pain :)
