I drink a lot of smoothies throughout the week and they come from tropical smootie cafe. I'm not sure if its ok to be drinking them anymore because I'm pregnant. Granted they are made with real fruits and ice. They also have some kind of powder ingredient that I think may be called turbino or something like that. I guess it some king of energy podwer?? But I'm wondering is it safe to drink smoothies from tropical smoothie. Can anybody help me?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm not being too catious. It was just a simple question as far as the tubinado is concerned. I love friut and I know its good for me. This is my first pregnancy and a lot I don't know so that's why I'm asking, with all do respect. Thank youu to everyone for the helpful advice about the energy powder. If I don't ask then I don't know. Sure I will ask my doctor but its something I wanted to get different opinions on.

I haven't heard of any fruits that you can't have while pregnant. If I were you though, I would go with the straight smoothie and leave out the powders, as most of those haven't been tested for pregnant women.

The internet along with the Google is a wonderful thing:

Turbinado is sugar. Turbinado sugar crystals are much larger, and are made at an earlier period in the sugar cane processing method. It retains some of the flavor of molasses, a natural byproduct of the sugar process, which makes it a desirable addition to tea or coffee.

The first pressing of the sugar cane yields Turbinado sugar. It looks notably different from granulated sugar because it has much larger crystals and is golden to brown in color. It also is considered by some to be “healthier” since it receives less processing than does white sugar.

Find out what it is exactly and ask your doctor. Best to err on the side of caution, I always say. You can make your own smoothies easily with fruit, ice (or frozen yogurt), and yogurt!

Smoothes are fine (and actually healthy because of the fruit!), but I would be careful to make sure there are no additives. There are no Tropical Smoothies near me, but I go to Planet Smoothie and when I was pregnant I just made sure to only get smoothies that had fruit, ice, and/or yogurt. Some of their smoothies include "blasts" like energy powder and their menu actually says not to drink those when pregnant, so I just get the smoothies that don't have those extras.

every company makes them different.. find out from the place their ingredients and where they get their fruit from.. ie... south america or here.. is it fresh or frozen?? ... then give your dr. the info.. and see what he says.. you can make them at your home.... better idea.

Well, caffeine and phenylalanine and stuff like that aren't really good for the baby. That's what is usually in "energy" drinks and powders. My friend used to point at her kids and say, "that's Mountain Dew and that's Code Red," as they ran around the room screaming when I would complain about not having caffeine while I was preggy.
I would ask to see the ingredients of the powder next time you are there. You can always skip the powder and just do the fruit, juice, and ice. Years ago, I worked a Jamba Juice, believe me, you only need the fruit, juice, and ice to make a smoothie anyway!

Hi,

I think it's perfectly safe. Turbinado is just sugar in the raw. (really thick granules) Unless you're getting energy booster or other stuff added in, it should be perfectly safe.

Good luck! :)
