I went to a friends house and she had a cone on her dog. Because her dog is in heat and was licking herself, and she said she disnt want the dog to get an infection.I have never had a female dog, but at the same time I have never heard of putting a cone on during heat. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

I have never heard of using a cone during heat. The only time our dogs had them was due to surgery so they wouldn't try to chew on the surgical site. They hated having to wear a cone.

Eh. It's effective.

As for normal, most people choose to spay their female dogs, that way they don't have to worry about it at all.

I've more commonly seen "diapers" on females in heat, especially if they are going to be around males.

Well our female dogs have always been spayed and we never had that issue.

As far as the cone being used, we only use it when necessary. Our 14 yr old Cocker had surgery on his leg with an incision ALL the way down to his foot so he had to wear a cone for a day or so after the bandage came off so he wouldn't tear the wound open.

I hate using a cone and only do it when the vet recommends it to keep our dogs safe from causing further injury or infection.

that's awful. cones are occasionally necessary, but REALLY miserable for dogs (and worse for cats.)
infection inshmection. it's squicking her out, but she's been too careless to get the dog spayed.
