I am a teacher and one of my students recently went to a chiropractor for a concussion. I asked her about it and she said it has helped tremendously. Her headaches have improved and her body feels a little better. I would think it can't hurt!
Has anyone used a chiropractor to assess or treat a concussion? If so, how was your experience? My 12-year-old son suffered two sports-related concussions this winter and is currently off of almost all physical activity until doctor clearance. It's been frustrating, but he seems to be doing better this time than with the first one and we are obviously concerned about his long term health. I have confidence in his pediatrician. However, I was considering taking him to a specialist to discuss his long term future in contact sports. One of my neighbors who is a nurse recommended a chiropractor in our area who specializes in sports injuries, including concussions. I've used a chiropractor before, but this is the first time I've heard of one recommended for a concussion. He did suffer a neck sprain with each concussion so it does make sense to me in that respect.
Thanks for the information so far. Just to clarify, this would be in addition to his pediatrician, not instead of the doctor currently managing his care.

OK...Kristen has clearly never experienced a chiro...
While the chiropractor can't "cure" the concussion, he can address the issue surrounding it. The neck sprain is likely causing some blood flow issues, which also directly affect his balance and equilibrium. (I've had the "joy" of this, myself.)
So yes, it can definitely be helpful. The thing to be mindful of, is that you want a chiro who will make suggestions for how he can improve or alleviate his condition himself....stretching, posture, etc...
If it's just someone that wrings him out and tells him to come back, I'd look elsewhere.
Adjustments will help with the blood flow to the head and I agree with MandA M. that you should seek a chiropractor that will help with overall health, wellness, stretching and healthy diet. A good chiropractor will recommend an orthopedic, physical therapy or tell you that they cannot help at all. Some are only out to make a buck so I would ask your neighbor about a referral.
Kirsten R: Chiropractic care had been around since the late 1800's, I can tell you from experience that it works.
