Hello ladies!
My daughter was breastfed 3 months then bottlefed. She was first fed on demand. Now I'm feeding her 6oz every 4 hours when awake. She goes to sleep between 7-10. on early to bed nights occasionnally one bottle if she wakes up at 11 or 12 midnight At six months she is now 19 pounds. I'm concerned of her becomming overweight. When she was 12 pounds I informed the pediatrician of my concerns but she said due to her being a premie (2 months early) she was catching up so don't worry but now we both believe she is on the heavy side. I currently give her water (which she loves thank goodness) but am curious if there are any suggestions out there.Friends say don't worry because when she gets sick she will lose a few but i think there is more to be done.

What can I do next?

S.,
I wouldn't worry about it at all. My daughter is 9 months old and weighs 24 pounds. At 6 months she was 20 pounds. Once you daughter starts crawling she will start butning more calories. I wouldn't worry at all. My two older children were the same way as infants. My son was 21 pounds at 6 months and my older daughter was 20 pounds and they are both at a "normal" weight at 5 and 7. My son is actually on the small side. Personally I think "chubby" babies are happier and they look healthier.

With all due respect I feel very sorry for your daughter if she is only six months old and you are already concerned about her weight, that's inviting an eating disorder by the time she is what 6 years old? A six month old does not need to be dieting or drinking water.

She is barely mobile yet, when they start moving they lose weight fast. My daughter was about 17 pounds at 6 months and now she is two and a half and weighs 31 pounds, and she is very tall for her age. Your daughter will thin out too once the walking starts. Don't stress over it, she's still a baby.

Babies need fat for brain development. Babies are suppossed to gain weight. They do not need water or diets for that matter. When she begins walking she will slim down naturally. Until then you need to feed her appropriately.

Mom she is 6 months old, and on formula,

they need the nutrients that is in the formula for the first year,

they gain weight and then GROW, and as they grown the learn to MOVE, and the more they move the more fat they burn ,
and then the more fat they NEED.

20 pounds is NOTHING,.

All of my boys were atleast 20 pounds by 5-6 months, and NOW are only 30 pounds. at 2 and 3
my 3 year old is average height and weight, and my 2 year old is in the 95th percentile.

My oldest was 20 pounds by 4 months, however his length was large aswell, AND now he is underweight.

So you see kids even out,

at 6 months she is getting ready for a growth spurt, and will start solid foods soon, and drink less formula, she will learn to play and move around, and be more active,
And when she does she will thin out,

M

at 12 years old,

I really wouldn't be too concerned with her weight. She sounds just on target and she doesn't seem to be eating too much or too little. My little girl was a fat lil' baby! She was 1 week early and was 8.6 lbs and 21 inches long!! At 5 months she was about 22lbs and I don't even remember how long she was. Let's put it this way, she was WAY too long for her carrying seat in the car and we had to face her foward. She will now be 3 in 2 weeks from today and she is 41.5 lbs and 41-42 inches tall. My husband is 6'4 so she get it from him. The doctors were never concerned with her weight. She was just growing very fast as an infant. When she turned 18 months she just slowed her eating down ALOT because she wasn't going thru massive growth spurts anymore. And she is anything but fat now, she's very long and lean like my husband. Your lil one sounds just perfect, I wouldn't worry yourself over it! Good luck!

They gain weight very quickly in the first 7-8 mos. Then at 9 mos they slow way down. My son only gained 3 pds from 9 to 12 mos. Also she isn't mobile yet. Once she becomes mobile she will burn a lot more calories too. So I wouldn't worry.

I would definitely not worry about her weight gain. It's amazing the amount of growing and developing that they do in the first year. I would be wary of giving her water because she does need the calories and fat found in formula for brain development and you could always try feeding her on demand instead of scheduling. Think about why you stopped feeding on demand in the first place. The other moms are right also about her movement. When she starts wiggling and crawling you'll be amazed the changes. My cousin was very chunky and pudgy as a baby and now she's four and definitely on the skinny side. Just my opinion of course, but talk to your doctor if you're concerned!

Try not to stress too much...my son was a CHUNKSTER at that age and I too woried he'd be overweight but now at 2 1/2 he is perfect. They grow very fast and put on a lot of weight around that age. Please do not try to limit feedings because of the weight issue. She will grow into herself!

she will thin out when she starts moving...my first son (also breastfed) was 25lbs at 6months and 26lbs at 1year...but quite a bit taller...once he started moving he didn't gain so fast, now he is 8years old and average height and weight...actually probably on the small side...he's a regular to a slim...don't stress about weight and size as a baby...chubby babies are so beautiful! Just teach your daughter good habits from the get go...eating healthy and exercising...if there is a history of obesity in your family, then talk with your peditrican about your concerns/fears, just remember a chubby baby doesn't mean chubby for life... yes there is a great deal of obesity in children today but that's a lifestyle choice(not always but as a trend) and as your daughter grows older limiting computer/game systems and junk/fast foods and encouraging playing outside and eating a well balanced diet you really shouldn't have anything to worry about. good luck!

Your baby is still a baby and babies tend to lose weight once the movement starts. My son was heavy until he started to walk and now he is three and moves so much he is on the skinny side. encourage movement. Put toys slightly out of reach so she can reach for them and try to move foreword also walkers encourage movement. Belly time also helps.

I've got you all beat! My 6 month old is 23 pounds! But he's actually right on target because he was born 9 lbs 8 ounces... so if you look at the RATE he gained weight he's right where he's supposed to be. So that's what is most important, not the baby's actual weight.

Relax - she'll lose any excess poundage when she's mobile which is right around the corner! Not to mention, give the poor girl a break during the only time in her life when thigh rolls are actually preferable. ;)
