Our computer crashed, bought a new one - Windows 8 - a lot different from the version we had before. The screen is too bright - Do you know how to dim the screen?
Flaming Turnip I followed your suggestion and found a sun when I click on it I get the message "Windows can't change the brightness on this pc" ???

Well, I have Windows 7. For me it is under "Control Panel" (on the Start Menu). Click on "Hardware and Sound," then find the big battery that says "Power Options." Click on that, and at the bottom it says "Adjust Screen Brightness."
Or, you could just click on "Control Panel," then type in "Brightness" in the search box. That's how I found it on my computer.
ETA - Sorry about that. I should have known not to answer. Hope you got it to work.

In desktop, swipe from the right, please for the love of god tell me you have a touch screen! If not, place your mouse, yeah I know, not a mouse, in the bottom right corner and run it up the side. Icons will appear. Bottom button is settings, click that, screen, click that, there is a slide bar that dims the screen.

Gidget, 8 is nothing like 7 in regards to the control panel and settings. I have ran every OS since Win 95, this one is freaky.

Just so Michelle doesn't scare you I love Windows 8 but it was a learning curve. I have to know how to get under the hood and it took me almost an hour to figure out how. That may not seem like a long time but I can usually go right to systems and control panel.
I sent ya a message, not sure why it didn't occur to me you have a desktop. You control the monitor brightness through the monitor on a desktop. The menu button should give a brightness option.
I guess when I am typing on a laptop the world is a laptop.

I have NO idea how to do this but a friend of mine said that you can make a change in Windows 8 to make it like Windows 7. If/when my computer crashes this is what I will do! I have heard nightmare stories about 8.
