Composting Mamas

We have two composters...a barrel and a homemade one (trashcan with holes). We have been composting a little over a year and we really like it. But today our composter is swarming with fruit flies...consequently, they are all over the yard and all over our kitchen. We know how to get them out of the kitchen, but what are we doing wrong to cause such an infestation? I think we have a good mix of browns and greens, but not totally sure.

What can I do next?

It might be too wet so add more browns. I also try to add a few earthworms each year as well as turn the compost to mix it so not all the freshly added items are in one layer (that is when I have noticed fruit fly problems for us).

Great question! I would looooove to compost but Hubby is against it as he thinks it will smell too bad for the neighbors. Yet what I've read suggests that if it is done correctly it won't smell. Who's right?
