Complaining Cashier - What Would You Do?

I was in a local grocery store this morning and the cashier (around age 60) was complaining about how lazy the supervisor (around age 20) was. She stated that he "sits on his perch and watches what happens through a small window and I need to call him each time I need something". She also stated that he never did any work so she is not sure how he got his manager job.

What would you do in this situation? Ignore it? Tell the store owner? Say something back to the cashier?

I usually respond with things like, "Oh I know how it is, I've worked retail too!" then tell her you hope she has a better day.

I'd laugh and wink at her. There's no way I'm going to tell on a 60 yo to the store manager for something like that. Not my business! And probably true!

"Wow. That's quite a pickle!" They're just venting. And no, I wouldn't tell the store owner either. At 60, it must suck to work for some wet-behind-the-ears kid and not be trusted to do voids, returns and some of the easiest transactions checkers used to be able to perform with considerable autonomy.

And it's likely the kid can't even count back change correctly. I'll bet she can!

tough situation to be in.

Many of today's youth ARE "entitled" and have no work ethic. If it's a chain store - I would contact the customer service department and let them know that employees think the manager is a slacker....(seriously)

I would tell her to speak up and be heard. Do it tactfully and show how the customers are affected due to his lack of participation on the floor...but that's me....

I would also tell her "THANK YOU!" and have a nice day. Don't let the small people bring you down...

I probably would have said, " that must totally suck".

Maybe a little bit inappropriate, but so were her comments. Not all young people on the job blow at it. I was a manager from 21 until recently when we moved. Lots of the older crew thought they could do better. They were very wrong. Age doesn't matter, imo, work ethic and being open to change do.

First of all, none of us (or you) know "what" his job IS.
We don't know his function, NOR his attitude of or lack of entitlement.
Maybe while he's "sitting there" (according to her) he's doing 50 other things that she's not aware of. Who knows?

So, in this case...She was venting. Albeit unprofessional, not your problem. Nod, take your stuff & go.

In the case of über-chatting cashiers and bag boys (talking about Tina's tattoo, or Donald's date last night), that can't give customers a simple look or a word of "thanks" THEN I talk to the manager.

I would ignore it. She shouldn't run her mouth, either, but unless it impacted my getting out of there or she said it every time I went there, I'd ignore it as one-off.

Oh god... I used to have a manager like that. He sat up in the break room watching movies while everyone else worked. As a cashier, I had absolutely no power and needed to call him for every override, price change, or problem of any kind. He often took his walky talky off so that he wouldn't be interrupted. So one day, I had a HUGE line (It was a small store and there was often only 3 employees in the store... The cashier, the stockman, and the manager). I was waiting on my manager to come down and override something. Everyone in the line was starting to get impatient. I had called my manager over the walky talky multiple times with no response. Eventually the customer asked, "Where the hell is he?" I was so pissed off at the guy that I responded with, "Honestly, he's probably upstairs watching a movie and having a snack." The confused customer asked, "Is he on a break?" I shook my head and replied, "Nope!"

A couple weeks later, my manager got me into the same predicament! Since he is the manager he is supposed to stay in the store at all times unless he is on a break. About half an hour before closing time, he walked past me with his coat on and said that he was going to Subway to get his dinner (Subway was right next door)... Apparently, he didn't have time to stop after we closed. He just left me and the stockman, in the store, alone. So about 5 minutes till closing all the customers come up with their purchases and I'm working my way through another HUGE line. Of course I have problems, but I can't do anything because my manager is at subway! We were stuck there for another 10 minutes waiting for him!

I really feel for that cashier!!!

i wouldnt do anything.. but i also wouldnt say anything to encourage her to continue on with her rant.. i can assure u if she continues to do it the manager will find out and she'll get in serious trouble.. i was a cashier at one of the busiest shoprites for 2 years and it was hell .. but i knew better than to complain to a customer let alone someone i didnt know.. i mean for all she knew u coulda been the managers cousin or something.. the only poeple i would complain to were family and friends that didnt work there.. word gets around quick.. it definaltey doesnt look good for the store to have their employees complaining about management

Say "I'm sorry! That's not fair" Or something similar to that.

It's most likely true. When I worked at a grocery store, it was the same way. The manager would sit up there all day and just peer through the window and not do anything. If you needed them you would have to call up there and wait forever for them to decide to come down. It was frustrating!

So just sympathize with her, dont report her. What would be the point? Everybody needs to vent sometimes, and I bet it must be hard for her some days to deal. Cut her some slack. If she was nice to you, that's all that matters!

I would say that if you do not like it the do something to change it - complaining to customers is not a way to do so, in fact it is a way to get fired and a way to drive business elsewhere. - In fact, I have said that before.

Please say something to the manager. He needs to meet with each one of them separately. The 20 year old doesn't know how to do his job, and needs to be told. That busy-body woman is old enough to know that she is not supposed to talk about stuff like this to customers. In fact, she is the worst of them both.

I wouldn't say anything...which is surprising, I know! But in the grand scheme of things if he's not doing his job according to her it's her who needs to tell the upper management.

However, I a little appalled by some answers here. If there weren't people willing to work in the grocery store what would those of you do for food? Seriously, show some respect. Those people at least have a job and are working...just because someone works in a grocery store, or other retail outlet doesn't mean they're lower class citizens. Means they are working.

Tell her that if she is unhappy, she should contact the supervisor above the supervisor in question and she shouldn't be telling customers this. Then, if this person told me this again the next time i was in, I would report it.

I'd just smile and sigh, and say hope your day gets better. She was just venting and maybe having a bad day. Maybe what she was saying is true, maybe it isn't. Maybe the manager has a degree in business management or something that she doesn't know about. At any rate, it's really inappropriate to complain about your job to a customer period. If you told the store manager, she would probably get a warning or something so I'd just ignore it.
