how much fish can we eat while pregnant. what fish to avoid? I love tilapia, mahi mahi, salmon, shrimp, scallops, mussels.... but am so confused on what the internet says, what the fda says and what the doctor says. does anyone have a clear answer on how much we can eat or a website updated at least to 2010 of what and how much we can consume while pregnant?

What can I do next?

The website below lists the mercury levels in many fish and seafood. I think some of the worst are swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish for high levels. Not sure but I think 6 oz of low mercury a week, so two servings is what I have seen. Some types of tuna are higher. Salmon and shrimp have been good to eat in everything I have read. I think tilapia is fine for mercury, but not as high in omega3s, so should be okay to eat. I love tilapia too. Mahi Mahi is one of the medium level ones I think. The second website has a small chart about half way down with safe, limited amounts and ones to avoid.

I have also seen to avoid a lot of farm raised fish because of other health issues and they contain more PCBs.

Good luck to you!

your doc office should have all that info. mine did 2 servings per week is a good amount. the bigger the fish, the more bad stuff.

It is the Mercury in the fish that you have to worry about. My dr said no more than 1 8 oz serving in one week. I had Salmon everyone in a while but I tried to steer clear of everything else.

This won't be totally clear, but at least helpful. You don't want to eat anything that eats another fish (shark, king makerel, etc...) because then it has it's own mercury and that of the fish it eats. You don't want to eat farmed fish because they can pick up more disease from other fish in the farm. The bigger the fish, the older it is the more mercury it has, so small amounts of light (NOT WHITE) canned tuna or fresh tuna steaks are ok - a serving a week or so - and wild-caught, un-died salmon once a week or so.
You can eat small fish 2-3 times a week. Trout, cod, white fish, etc...are pretty safe.

I forget what the rule on scavenger fish (catfish and others) is.

A few servings a week you don't want to eat it for lunch/ dinner everydayGood rule of thumb is not to eat any fish that eat other fish.
