Commercially Available "Natural" Frosting

Hi Moms,

My son's birthday is coming up and he can't eat dairy. I was going to make him a cake but I have not been able to make good non-dairy frosting and was wondering if there was a brand that you knew of that was non-dairy. I do not want Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. They have tons of artificial flavors and chemicals. I am open to making my own frosting if you have an excellent recipe.

What can I do next?

I use a standard frosting recipe and substitute 1/2 Earth Balance (dairy-free margarine) and 1/2 organic shortening (Crisco-like stuff found in the organic section) for the shortening or butter called for in the recipe. If the recipe calls for milk, soy or coconut milk both work just fine. You can't even tell it's dairy free and the 1/2 shortening makes it hold up a little better if you want to do any decorating. When you use just the Earth Balance, it gets a little runny at room temperature. For pure decorating (piping, etc.), I would leave the Earth Balance out completely.

You should check out www.foodallergymama.com. The blog author's son is allergic to milk, egg and peanut and she has many wonderful recipes on the site as well as her own cookbook. My son is also milk allergic and I have made many cakes for him substituting Earth Balance. They have margarine and shortening that come in sticks and work very well in recipes. If you want a decorator's frosting you can find Wilton's on their website and just use Earth Balance and rice milk. No one will know the difference.

We use a brand called Cherry Brook Kitchen. It's allergen free and tasty!!

P.S.
I used the mixes, not the jar.

I would do what Eliza suggested--Earth's Best is great stuff.

Regarding Cherry Brook Kitchen.... oof. That is bad stuff if you buy it in the container like I did. The texture alone gets a thumbs down. Downright nasty. However they do sell it in a mix form and maybe that would be better.

I don't know any frosting, but I was wondering if you ever went to dairy queen for frozen treats. my son is allergic to many things and dairy is one. But they make a thing called star kisses. That would be a good treat for your son. And all the kids who go to your son birthday party would enjoy them too.

I don't know of a commercially available one, but I've substituted water for the milk and Earth's Best (it's a vegan butter substitute available in every grocery store I've checked) for the butter in any butter cream icing recipe. (I bake by look and feel, so I'd google a recipe if you're looking for exact measurements) No one at the last birthday party knew the difference and there were lots of compliments on the cake.
