Hey moms...has any one had abnormal PAPs and ever have to have a colposcopy? I'm HPV negative and have no risk factors for cervical cancer. I'm freaking out here. I want to know if any one has been through this and what the outcomes were. I waited so long to start a family and I have a toddler but want more children. Now i may never be able to have any more. I've read so much about it but no one ever mentions pregnancy in the articles.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you every one for your advice and support. I feel better now that so many people have been through this and most of you were okay. I've got one more week to go before the procedure.

I had a colposcopy nearly 20 years ago. I had abnormal cells show up in 2 paps. It was na in-office procedure, very quick, and I didn't experience much pain, had no heavy bleeding or other side effects. All turned out well for me.
Talk to your doctor. Ask any questions you have. Better to catch a problem early.
Good Luck!

I have been throughn that twice. While it's not a fun exam it's nothing to worry about. They will look for any abnormal cells and if they find any they will take a small sample to test and see of there is anything wrong. Most of the time it's nothing. Both times I had to have the samples taken only to find out I got myself all worked up over nothing. The doctor told me any hormonal change can cause the abnormal cells and it's really not as uncommon as you would think. It's really more of a safety precaution than anything. Don't worry, I'm sure you will be just fine!! :) And don't worry about be able to have children because I just had a beautiful baby girl after going through it twice!!

Don't freak out. Get a hold of yourself and gather the knowledge you need from all of us who have had this done and take a breath. It is very scary when a pap comes back abnormal, but as women, we need to do what we have to to stay healthy. The procedure takes all of 10-15 minutes, it is performed in the doctors office, you are in and out. It is painful, feels like a deep pinch. Kinda like when you are tweezing your eyebrows and you miss the hair and catch your skin. The doctor is basically taking skin from within the vaginal wall to biopsy. Take someone with you for moral support. My bleeding was heavy after the procedure but stopped by the next day. My doctor told me I might experience cramping, I did but it was mild. I took 2 tylenol and went to bed. Do not do anytjhing stressful like lifting, after the procedure, just relax. Try not to worry, it will only make it more stressful for you if you do. Breathe......in with the good air.....out with the bad. Good luck T.!

Hi T.
I have had abnormal pap smears in the past but never a colposcopy. The negative pap smears came to nothing.

Fear will bring about other things so I suggest you go to thus website and watch a short video that will help relieve your fear and anxiety. www.LTFChurch.com

I hope this helps you.

I've had it done 3 times. Once before I had my son, and twice since. Basicallt the colposcopy is just looking in there with a lense, the uncomfortable part is the biopsy. If they look and not see anything they may not do a biopsy. In any case, my last 2 paps have been abnormal, but after the colposcopy and biopsy they were able to confirm that nothing is wrong. From what I understand if the abnormal cells are "low grade" they wouldn't do anything about it, and you can plan a pregnancy. if's it's high, then you do need to have the cells removed. The procedure to remove the bad cells is dependant on where the cells are. In any case you can plan to get pregnant after the cells are removed. Hope this answers the question.

Hi T.,
I had a colposcopy and became pregnant shorty after with my third child. I have had clear paps since then this was 8 years ago. I had some discomfort a few days after but that was it.
I feel so bad you are so upset. Take Care and talk to your obgyn about your concerns.
