My four year old boy still doesn't know his colors. He can count,write his name, etc. He is very smart except when it comes to color. The teacher doesn't think he is color blind because he matches like colors perfectly. I am wondering if there is a different kind of color blindness. We have tried different games like tell me the color of the Skittle or M&M and than you get to eat it. He than decided he doesn't really want the candy. Any ideas are welcome, and I am wondering about the medical side as well.
I am having the same problem with my 4 year old. He knows his letters, writes his name, counts. But when it comes to colors, he is lost. He knows yellow, and orange and red fine. But when it comes to green and blue he just says they are "dark". He knows that the trees and grass is green and the sky is blue, but can't pick out the colors. I have an appointment to have him tested before he starts kindergarten.

It sounds like he's probably not interested right now. There are DVDs and books that he might be interested in. Have you tried to take him to the eye doctor? Like the other mom said, he may have to see an optomoligist. Don't push him to learn if he's not willing, it may push him away from wanting to learn even more. And of course, pray for him...The Lord is always there!
Have you considered talking with a pediatric optomologist? Maybe setting up an appointment to have an evaulation? How about talking with early intervention in your area. I know they only work with children until 3 years old but they may be able to referr you to somebody in the area.
I also know that color blindness is more common in boys than girls? If you call the optomologist, ask them if the have an eye test that can determine color blindness.
I was shocked when I brought my 10 year old to the eye doctor and he asked me if she had been temp. deprived of oxygen at birth. My answer was yes, but I didn't know how he could tell that by looking in her eyes. He said you would be surprised what an eye test can tell us, now a days.

have his sight checked. He may have a slight case of color blindness. I know my mother can not see pink or yellow or actually any light colors only bold colors. Most day cares use your basic colors wich are very bold. Good luck to you
He still may be partially colorblind. The term 'colorblind' is a misnomer... people with the condition can see some colors, but may have trouble distinguishing others such as red or green. Sometimes it is only one color, sometimes just certain shades. The best way to check is have a psychologist or other mental health pro administer a color selection test. It is usually a number or letter made out of a certain color of dots in a background of other colored dots. It is not uncommon, and once diagnosed is rarely an issue.

Um, you may want to speak to your child's pediatrician because color blindness tends to be where they see one color as a different one but they would see the same color in place of one color. Such as they might see purple instead of green but they would always see it the same way and would see different shades of green as different shades of purple. This would be why he can match colors but their names don't match with what you see. I would definitely suggest speaking with his doctor about it. Not only would the doctor be able to see if he is maybe color blind, the doctor may also be able to determine if it might be a different problem.

my husband is colorblind but its shades of colors like greens and blues and purples. there are all different levels of colorblindness. a person that is colorblind usually doesnt meen they only see black and white.
Hi L., It would probably be a good idea to have him tested. Maybe an eye Doctor. If your son is seeing colors wrong, for example; red looks like green, then he would still be able to match like colors together. He just wouldn't be able to identify them by their correct names.

What i found out about my son, at about 5 years old was that he was red green colorblind. He was normal about everything in almost everything. Even his teachers told me no, when i would bring it up. I would notice that he would confuse green, brown, and orange colors. he knew that the grass was green and would tell you that...but to actually recognize the color...he couldnt. He would say a brown van or orange ball was the same as the grass. I finally took him to an eye dr, and they tested him, and confirmed it. He is 11 now, and still have occasional problems with colors. They say he will eventually learn to differentiate which shade of gray is green, brown, and orange.

The paint department at a home improvement store comes to mind. Ask him to go get the blue color swab..and so on. Let him pick what he sees as blue, green, red. It may give an indication of what he sees.
