Colonial Costumes

My 10 y.o. b/g twins are studying the Colonial era in school, and they're supposed to wear Colonial costumes next Tuesday. My dd wants to go to Queeen of Hearts (costume shop) in Plano to get a costume, and I told her that it was too expensive; I could drop $75 on a kid in there awfully easily. I don't have time or the talent to sew anything. I don't have a big wad of cash to burn on costumes (boy and girl) for a single day. Help, Mamas!

What can I do next?

When my daughter was in 1st grade they did a play about the American Revolution. Most of the boys wore dark baseball pants and white button down shirts of their moms (not that any of them would admit it!). Don't know if that would work for your son or not. Many of the girls just wore long skirts (or again, raided mom's closet and safety-pinned at the waist), a button down blouse, and threw on an apron tied around the waist. I know 10 year olds are pickier than 7 year olds, but hope this helps!

M.,
I say don't over worry this. Do the best you can with what you can find at the Goodwill shop and around your house. Don't worry about it being perfect. Call the teacher for some cheap ideas. If you can get away with spending no money at all, even better.

I have one colonial costume you could use. My daughter wore it for a school project. It is a dress and a hat. I live in Allen if I am close and you want to use it you can. Let me know.

There is a Plano vintage shop down the street from Queen of Hearts (west of the City Hall). They have tons of costumes/clothing. Not terribly cheap, but less than $75!

My 13 year old daughter had to do something similar . . . dress as Martha Washington! I put out a request on the McKinney Freecycle site and wound up finding a woman in Princeton who had a dress that worked just fine . . . for free! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/McKinney_TX_Freecycle/

You can also try Craigslist.org. And by the way . . . you can have our dress . . . we don't need it anymore!
