I am looking for some info on Colon Cancer. My grandfather passed away from it in 1998. (That is my dads dad). Now my dad is having the same symptoms, but refuses to see a doctor. He said he has almost all blood in his stool and urine, and we can all tell just by looking at him that he is losing weight and fast. He is also an acholic (Spelling) which i know is not helping anything. But i am scared to death to go throught this cancer thing with another family member, all four of my grandparents have died for all different types of cancer. Any help and info is apperciated. Thank you

There are a couple of websites that I can direct you to, one is Mercksource.com (a medical professional website, so it can be a little wordy) and stedmans.com

However, as a medical professional, it sounds like he has colon cancer, unfortunately. And, unfortunately, it can only be him who decides what to do. I have gone through this with my father-in-law with the possibility of stomach cancer and/or colon. He still won't go in for the necessary tests, and just says it's nothing.

I get a lot of info from http://www.webmd.com. Simple language, diagrams and explanations of tests, treatments and outcomes, and things you should ask your physician - for the average person.
HAving said that, it really is up to him to make the move to find out how to beat this thing. No one else can do it for him.
Good luck - you're in my thoughts.

I work in the healthcare field and, unfortunately, see cancer on a daily basis. Your father definitely has the signs and symptoms of colon cancer, and colon cancer is a type of cancer that follows a hereditary path. The number one way to fight cancer is to catch it in the early stages so that it is treatable. Have him call the doctor TODAY!!! I see that you live in Wyoming, so if he is also in the area, I would suggest getting the ok from his primary to take him into the ER. (If he doesn't live in the area, have another family member or friend take him.) More than likely, they will take all of the blood tests and scans to give you the answers that you need. They may admit him, or give you the info to contact surgeons and oncologists on Tuesday. I strongly recommend surgeon Matthew Chung (he operates at Spectrum) and oncologist Enrico Sobong, but there are definitely others in the area that are also good. Seriously, the longer he waits, the faster it will spread, the harder it will be to treat. Good luck, I will be thinking of you!

First of all, sorry for your loss. This is a lot for you to go through. It is extremely unfair of your father to do this not only to himself but to those who love him and I think you should tell him that. What about his grandchildren, doesn't he care if he is around to see them grow up? The fear is always worse than the actual treatment, I'm sure. And, no doctor is going to force him into anything he doesn't want to do. Knowing, or knowledge is the key and then his loved ones can be there to help him along the way-that is what family is all about.

Anyways, I work for a group of many gastroenterologists and can get you a lot of information, but for starters, I think you should give your dad a hard time about the way he is acting. Give me your email address and I will try to get you as much info as I can. My email addy is : ____@____.com

Best Wishes
H.

Hi~
My grandfather refused to see a doctor until it was WAY too late. The very first thing you can do is get him to go...however you can. If you can't beg, guilt him into it. Even if he goes mad at you, at least he's going! Explain to him that this is not just himself he his hurting...it's his family!
Good luck!
