Please help me decide on a College Graduation Gift for a young lady who is very special to my family. She is graduating in August from Texas A&M University with a degree in History. I am ok with giving money, but thought I would see if anyone had another suggestion instead of money or to add with the money. Thank you for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

My graduation gift from my parents was a book of Etiquette for the corporate world. Other people got cars, trips, money. I got a book of Etiquette. I still have it and am amazed how many people in the business world don't know etiquette.

It may sound strange, but even something as simple as a trip to pick-out her first business suit, a haircut, a session @ Bobby Brown to learn how to do her make-up more professionally are all things down the road that can really pay off.

I'm big on personalized gifts, and I personally prefer experiences. My favorite gift would have been a lunch, dinner, weekend experience with the gift giver before moving into a hugely transitional part of my life.

Money is always great for grads. But if you want something more personalized, then I would consider her post graduation plans. If she is planning on traveling, maybe luggage. Items for her first apartment? Or new clothes for a new job.

If she drinks wine you can get a nice bottle of wine and have a specialized label or engraving done on the bottle. I know Wine Styles does this and some of the other wineries or stores around do it. My niece got one for her college graduation. They did her college logo in the background and then her name, graduation date, and something like "Congratulations" on it. Turned out great !

How well do you know her? What are her likes, hobbies, tastes? Once you decide, pick out a gift based on those things. Her degree is in History, perhaps you can find out her favorite period in history and give a gift based on that. Perhaps she likes certain kinds of historical music or artwork. Perhaps tickets to some local museums premier events or something like that.

If she likes to travel, luggage is great. Personalized is better. Finding beautiful travel containers and zip lock bag would be great too.

Get her something that would fit her personality as well as mark this triumphant time of life.

I would find out if there is one area in history or a person she is really into and try to find something that way. Maybe a book or picture. Or is there something in your family that you would pass onto your kids, like a cookbook that you could give to her. If she is going to be living on her own that's always a great gift to give.

If she like to get pampered, but hasn't beacuase of college, you can always do a day at a spa, or just take out for a mani/pedi. Spending time with her would be a HUGE thing, and would probably mean a lot as well to her.
