Colic Calm - San Ramon,CA

My baby is almost six weeks old and has been suffering from reflux and gas. I bought the colic calm recently but am hesitant on using it. It's super black in color and it freaks me out giving that to him. I did once and his poop was black. That really freaked me out. Is it really safe? Does it really work? My pedi hasn't heard of it so she couldn't advise me about it. It just breaks my heart when I see him in pain.

What can I do next?

Gripe Water, Hyland's colic tablets and the old standard Mylicon work well. I've never encountered colic calm, but I was willing to try just about anything! Good luck!

Hi S.:

The moment I read about the dark stool I knew that there must be charocal in this formula and checked their web site. Indeed it does and is absolutely safe and affective for your baby. Charocal is also great for us adults when there is intestinal discomfort, such as gas, bloating, bowel irregularities, food poisoning and is not absorbed by the body.

As a student of Homeopathy and Holistic Health consultant in private practice, there are many safe alternatives to medications that are affective, gentle and aid the body to heal itself. Mother nature has all we need to be well, we are just not educated and our Dr's neither. Homeopathy is based on Mother tinture and is significantly diluted to stimulate the body's healing process. I gave my own daughter now nine, homeopathic teeting tablets. They work miraculously and I still give her homeopathics for different conditions to this day. "Green" is a key theme now and our medicine should also be green. Any questions or comments please contact me. Y. Souza 65-###-###-#### Menlo Park, CA

I'm mot sure about that stuff, but I tried everything when my son had colic and nothing worked, except for this stuff called Cocyntal, I found it at Whole Foods it was GREAT!!! I even used it on my younger son when he has gas/constipation problems and have told many other moms about it and they LOVE ir as well. Its all natural and our pedi said it would be great to try and keep usng it if it worked. My kids are now 4 1/2 and 6 and I still use it with great success when they have tummy problems. Good luck.

Hi S.,

I'm not sure if your breast feeding or not but try eliminating all dairy from your/his diet. Colic is not a diagnosis. It's just a term doctors give when they don't know what is wrong with your baby.

Also, you can move his legs like riding a bicycle to help get the gas moving.

Girl, please don't use medicine on your six week old baby that you haven't researched! The best thing to use is warm, diluted camomille tea. Use bottled water, steep the tea 30-40 seconds, and let cool until luke warm, then add a 1/4 teaspoon corn syrup. And keep the baby out of night air. Make sure you keep baby's head covered if windy outside. Colic is just trapped gas. Oh, you might want to gently massage his lower back and tummy with that baby nite-time lotion.

My daughter developed colic at 5 weeks. I was nursing her exclusively and when I completely eliminated all dairy (including dairy proteins like whey and casein) from my diet, the colic ended. She was sensitive to dairy but by me staying off it for a year, she outgrew the sensitivity and can now eat any and all dairy products. I periodically tried to reintroduce dairy in to my diet while I was nursing her but her reactions seemed to continue until she was almost a year old. Eliminating the dairy proteins is difficult because they are found in many products, you have to read every single label. Other common allergens include nuts, gluten, strawberries, eggs and soy. If you are nursing your baby you can try eliminating one item at a time for a couple of weeks to see if it helps.
Good luck,

I've never heard of Colic Calm but I can swear by the instant relief of Gripe Water. I used it as a child and still use it today. Gentle Care brand has the best tasting formula and without parabens. Wellements is organic but the taste isn't too good. Haven't tried the Little Tummys brand. Gripe Water is made of ginger, fennel, and chamomile so it's natural and gentle on their stomach. My baby wasn't colicky but she'd have a time when her stomach was upset and she needed some extra help getting out the gas or poop. Good luck.

Dear, S.

I don't know if you believe in home remedies. I am a mother of four monderful children my oldest being 20 yrs. old I would give them mint tea. you can buy it at any grocery store. I would boil it in water put a little sugar for tste.and give this to my babies from the start that they would come home from the hospital that I never had a baby with bad colic. I remeber that I had that problem with my first when I she came home from the hospital. I would even drink it for the after birth pains you get after you get home. Its good for heavy cramping when your on your period. let me know how it works I hope this advice was not to late It is called Yerba Buena or Spirment Leaves

Good Luck!

We used Gripe water which seemed to help a ton. It is homeopathic and mostly clear. It has some herbal sediment but nothing too crazy. We just put the dose in a bottle usually and our baby did great, but she didn't have the reflux (just really hard gassy tummy). Hope your little one feels better soon.

Have you tried a little peppermint water? That is an old granny cure. Just drop a peppermint into some water in a bottle, wait a few minutes and give the bottle, as much as he may take (probably not much).
You can probably find something just for this at the natural food store, if you are uncomfortable with the "candy" part of it.
Good luck. The good thing is they do outgrow colic! But it is so stressful when they do that endless fuss. Try to not let it get to you-babies sense and mirror our stress.
Mine loved tummy massage (all massaage really), that may help too.

Wow, I'm so surprised that many mom's who had colicky babies haven't heard of colic calm. We had a colicky baby from 1-10pm for 4 months. We used colic calm on her and although it didnt completely fix the problem it helped for a little bit. It calmed her down enough to give us a little break. She would usually just go to sleep for a little bit. Dont get freaked out by the black, its fine. We used it for about 2 1/2 months until the colic stopped. We also used Mylicon immediately after every single feeding. Just go online and google colic calm and see what others have to say about it. And yes to the other mom who said she wore black t-shirts....wear black t-shirts! Just remember it will get better, the pain will go away and they will never remember it. Just hang in there, be careful what you eat (if you are breastfeeding), switch formulas if that applies, do alot of rocking and singing. Try different things and you will find things that will help them....and if it gets really bad stick him in a bath. That always did the trick for my daughter.

Hi S.,
I have never heard of Colic Calm, but I have lots of experience with reflux. My son has acid reflux (family history of GERD). You can find out if your son has it by asking your ped to do the same test Denise F described. We had it done for our son at two weeks old and the dr. could see right away that his esophogeal sphincter wasn't working properly. I know what you mean about the heart-breaking pain. There were many nights that I cried right along with my son as he screamed himself to sleep. One of the tricks that I found worked well was a tip from Harvey Karp's DVD, "The Happiest Baby on the Block." After you swaddle your baby, turn him onto his right side and jiggle him slightly. That was the surefire way to get my boy to sleep. He'd cry for maybe 10 minutes, then drift off to sleep. Also, putting him to sleep on an incline worked well. We used his car seat in his basinette and, later when he was in his crib, a sleeping wedge. It helps to keep the acids in his tummy from creeping up his esophagus and waking him up in the night. Definitely try the elimination diet also. I tried it for two months but it didn't make any difference for me. We ended up putting my son on formula and Prevacid. He still takes it at 9 months old, but he doesn't scream from the acid reflux anymore and he's been steadily gaining weight. Please ask your dr. about GERD, it can be dangerous if left unchecked.
Good luck,
D.

If you are interested in a natural way of helping him email me and I will send you some info. If you would like to talk with one of the doctors that works in our group I can also set that up for you.

Lactose intolerance and other milk protein intolerances are much more common than most people realize. Like another mom here I would try to eliminate it from your diet if you're strictly breast feeding and your baby's diet if it's a formula. Even switching to goat milk products helps lots of us who are intolerant of cow's milk. IT sounds like a food allergy, so I would try an elimination diet before drugs. Good luck. Also gluten intolerance is quite common (one in a hundred) and cause all manner of digestive problems.

I went through all of the prescription meds for colic when my daughter was a baby. I was not getting much sleep and was at my wits end when my MIL sent me this wonderful stuff called Gripe Water. It worked better than anything else and I finally got sleep and my baby was happy. I searched every where around and finally found it at an English import store on Watt ave. The store is called A Touch of Brittain. Good luck and god bless.

I had 2 babies that went through the colic stage and no it isn't fun. What kind of reflux issues is he having? I used the mylicon gas drops and sometimes that helped and sometimes it didn't. The doctor told me that one thng you do one day might not work the next. I used the snugli to carry my son around and every night when he would start being fussy I used to sooth him by walking around in the house. That seemed to help alot. My son did spit up alot but he finally got over that after a few months. It was to the point that after every feeding he spit up. Sometimes I thought hejust spit up everything he ate. The doctor didn't seem to concerned so I wasn't. I know it can be frustrating with the crying, just try to remember that he will outgrow this. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I used it for about 4 months. My baby had Acid reflux pretty bad. The charcoal did help but I had to get a prescription as well. Zantac didnt work and she hated it so we tried pepcid and that helped. But you want to wait at least 2 hours after you give the meds to give colic calm. I do recommend colic calm!! I would start with the colic calm, it was really helpful but if the reflux is bad enough you may need to add meds as well. You little man with have black poop and dusty black farts.
I would also suggest cutting out Dairy and other foods if you havent yet. I cant send you more info along with some attachments I have if you want them
My email is ____@____.com email me there and Ill send you all I have. My baby is 8 months old and has been reflux free for 6 weeks now. it does pass.

I do not have info on colic calm but had similar experience with my daughter, now 10 weeks old. She suffers from excess gas and use to have alot of discomfort. After doing some reading and talking to professionals, here are a few suggestions that worked for me: a) Be sure burp the baby after every feeding by holding your baby upright and bouncing him on your knee(think of carbonated sodas and what happens when you tap a soda can or bottle- the bubbles rise up). b) When he is on his back, bicycle his legs and push them up towards his chest which helps push out the gas from his rear. c) Keep baby upright after feeding for at least 1/2 hour to prevent acid reflux. d) When baby sleeps, use an incline to help prevent acid reflux. I suggest you read the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Harvey Karp, MD he gives great advice. Good Luck!

Hi S.,

I did use Colic Calm with my son when he was newborn. He also had a lot of gas and acid reflux, and he cried all day long! I was very hesitant to use it; in fact it was my husband that gave it to him the first time while I got some sleep. It did calm him down quickly and he took a nice long nap! Before we used it, I showed it to my son's doctor who said it was fne to use. For more info on reflux, you might check out infantreflux.org I thought it was a great resource.

Colic is a difficult journey for both child and mother. There is some informatin that I believe may be of interest.
My passion is to help educate so solutions can be found to allow the body to heal at the foundational level.

First to answer your question about the colic calm you asked about. The product is 'all natural' and safe for your baby and can be of help in managing the colic symptoms. The color change in the stools is a result of the Aloe and other herbal remedies..nothing to worry about. It is however controlling symptoms and it is very important to look at cause. I want to encourage you to watch a documentary I have available that assists mothers of children in this generation to see what is really going on.
It is a 10 minute documentary and can be a wealth of information.

Dear S.,
I am a certified infant massage educator and I beieve colic and gas are two different things. For the colic I would try reading The Happiest Baby on the block by Dr. Harvey Karp. This book is amazing & has helped so many families I know with babies who suffer from colic. It is a must read!!! It will give you step by step safe techniques to use that will help soothe your baby. For gas I would suggest taking an infant massage class where you can learn specific strokes to help relieve gas or get the book ( Infant Massage - A Handbook for Loving Parents by Vimala McClure )This book has great instructions and photos. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about the suggestions I made.

I can only answer the question about reflux. My son was born with several birth defects including acid reflux. My doctors performed an easy test on him. They put him in front of an xray machine with some sweat chalky stuff. Once he swallowed they was able to see instant reflux. They found out that his lower esophageal sphyncter was not working. They put him on Reglan not Ritlin people get them confused. within a week it had started to strengthen it. This happened when he was a newborn he is now 3 1/2 years old and striving.

Both of my daughters (2 1/2 yrs old and 10 weeks old) have reflux. I know what you are going through! I worked for a pediatrician for 15 yrs before being a SAHM and have never heard of Colic Calm either. At 3 weeks of age, I insisted that we start a trial of zantac for my oldest. I also completely took all cows milk protein out of my diet since I was nursing her exclusivly. Within 72 hours of being off the CMP I had a different baby. She had to see the GI for an evaluation eventually but it helped me get through that first year. We have a strong family hx of GERD and now the newest addition is on zantac for her reflux. Talk to your pediatrician about it...she may be willing to give it a try. Zantac has been around for a long time and is very safe for infants. Also, if you are nursing, you should evaluate what you are eating to see what the culprit may be. CMP is usually #1 on the list but other foods might be soy, corn, wheat, anything spicy, cabbage, broccoli, fresh veggies (unfortunatley), citrus and oats. I found that when she was having her screaming jags, a warm bath and massage always helped a lot! Good luck...it will get better!

Hi S.~

i have a suggestion that may seem a bit strange at first. i suggest looking into what is called Elimination Communication. you can search this online and find books about it called the Diaper Free Baby. basically, EC is communicating with your infant and taking them to the bathroom to relieve themselves. it sounds outrageous at first, but it really works. we started this with our son at 5 months and now, at 14 months, we catch most pees and poos. he poops in the toilet and we haven't had to deal with fear of using the potty or much tummy troubles. i am suggesting this to you because many mamas have stated in their testimonials about EC that their once colicy baby is tummy-trouble free now. babies are born with an innate knowledge to not want to soil themselves and i think many babies suffer from these tummy issues because they don't want to poo all over themselves. since we EC'ed our son, it is quite disturbing to my husband and i that our society thinks it's okay for babies to soil their pants for 2+ years. no person wants to poo in their pants, including babies. which, again, i think is why many babies suffer from stomach problems. EC is not for everyone, but it really ends up being less work in the end and is worth checking out.

good luck!
