I have a five week old and he is seems to be colicky. I can't pinpoint the reason. I have tried swing, bouncer, labor ball and of course walking, talking and singing. I need some suggestions :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I feel your pain, as I'm going through the same thing. Fortunately in my case she's 3 months now and growing out of it FINALLY. She still has some episodes, but it's bearable now. Believe me, we tried EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. Even gripe water or myelicon drops didn't touch it! We even had multiple exams, blood work, and a MRI for acid reflux. Everything would always come back okay. We even had her on acid reflux meds for awhile just in case the MRI was a false negative, but the meds didn't work. She would cry hours at a time. My husband and I were losing our minds! Here's what worked for us (most of the time, not always of course.)

*Vacuum noise cd (we still use it at night when we put her in the crib). You can buy on itunes or online. OR if you want, I'll mail a copy to you (no problem). I can't say it enough "Try it, try it"!!!

*Bouncy chair with vibration (the bouncing/vibration feeling is calming to her). During those 5 weeks of "severe" colic she literally slept in the chair with the vacuum noise going in the background.

*Dr. Brown's bottles (the best bottles I believe available that eliminates air bubbles completely)! It helped eliminate most of her gas.

*Good Start formula - other formulas were too harsh on her tummy. Good start has special broken down proteins that other formulas don't have. I really believe it makes a difference (for us anyway).

*When she was to the point of not return, it was time for a drive (usually evening time), and I don't mean a short drive...try about 2-3 hours, but hey, that's how I kept my sanity! I guess the motion/vibration of the car soothed her.

*Last but not least....if your baby does indeed have colic, it WILL go away! Hang in there, and let me know if I can help in any way.

Regards,
L.

Hi A.,
I had 3 boys and ALL 3 had colic. So I can imagine that your so tired and worn out and just tired of not knowing what the heck to do. I had a few tricks that helped me and I thought I would share them w/you.
1)Lay the baby on his back and move his legs as if he were on a bicycle. This for some reason relieves the gas. He should start tooting up a storm.
2)Then I always wrapped them up tightly in a blanket. (kind of like how the indians did) This will enable him to keep from moving alot which creats the pain.
3)Set his carrier on top of the dryer. The warmth from the dryer and the suttle movement creates relief also.
4)MYLCON DROPS.
I really hope this helps. And I will say stay strong. HE WILL GROW OUT OF IT!!!
Sincerely,
S. :)

What they believe causes colic is an immature neurological system competing with a newly active digestive system. If we can soothe them it stops the crying which also stops the excess gas production.

Try Dr Karps dvd on The Happiest Baby on the Block. It really works and must be done in the order he gives to trigger the calming reflex.

I teach this class and have one scheduled this Saturday morning at 9 am at The Nestingplace. I am certified by Dr Karp's foundation to teach his techniques so that you can personalize them to your baby.

If you are interested call 877-625-6803 to register.

My youngest went through the same thing as well as acid reflux at the same time. Gripe Water works wonders and so does Little Tummies Gas Drops. MYLICON DID NOT WORK.

Definitely lay your baby on his back and do the bicycle motion and also rub his tummy with slight pressure.

I hope this helps.
I know what you are going through and I hope this helps.
Gentle Ease formula helped as well as Dr Browns bottles.
Good Luck
M.

Check out or buy the book "Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Karp it will help you tremendously in dealing with colic. It saved us!! The 5 steps he gives were like miracles to us. I don't remember them all now but I do remember the swaddling, sucking (on your fingers, paci, whatever), sideways holding (like holding a football but with baby facing outwards), noise of either shushing or humming, and one other that I can't remember. I would get the book or DVD it will help you.

Sounds like you may have tried anything I can suggest, but have you looked into either the book or DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp called "The Happiest Baby on the Block"? It employs the 5 S's. Swaddling, sushing, side position, sucking and swinging. Sometimes one will work and not the other and sometimes it takes a combo of all 5. We found that it usually works for our daughter (who is now 9 weeks old). She was pretty fussy at the beginning but is getting better all the time. Usually it is worst at night and she just needs it to fall asleep. I worry sometimes that she will have problems in the future going to sleep on her own. With her we have just had to be persistant. Right when you feel like giving up she falls asleep.

My son is 7 months old now but he did have colic for about 6 weeks, it started at about 4 weeks old and it seemed there was nothing we could do. We used to put him in his swing and then put the vacum cleaner next to it and turn it on, he would fall right to sleep. If you can stand the noise. After a while you can try turning it off but he might wake back up. Our doctor also told us to try Chamomile Tea which seemed to work great. You would give 1-2 ounces before it starts. Our son would start getting fussy at about 5:30 each night so i would give him the tea at about 5:00, this would settle his tummy. You can read about it at webmd, lots of people drink this for digestive problems.

Good luck and just rememeber he will grow out of it.

A., I have a couple of suggestions. One would be to get your baby to Dr. Cindy Haggerton. She is a chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy and babies! I have seen her change colic in one visit. Here office number is ###-###-####. Also, there are a couple of homeopathic remedies that you can try. One is Chamomilla and the other is Droseria (that might be spelled wrong!) I believe the Chamomilla is for the kind of colic that causes your baby to pull his/her legs up to her chest when she cries. The drosera is for the kindn of colic that causes the baby to stiffen his/her body straight out when he/she cries. Thats my two cents worth! Blessings!

You might try something called Gripe Water. I used it for my daughter when she was gassy, but I also know of several friends who used it with colicky babies who said it worked wonders!
