Hi, Okay so here is my problem, My daughter started pre school last yr and last winter alone I got about 6 colds!! Not even just a runny nose, The full thing the body aches, the cough. Now its only the beginning of nov. and she has come down with a horrible cold, and now I have it. Is this normal? I take vitamins, and as soon as I feel it i take loads of vitamin c. I just do not get it. I do not work, so I am wondering if that too is a factor, where I am not building up a defense. Anyway, I HATE being sick, it throws me all off. Plus Its hard to rest without being interupted. I just do not want this winter to be like last. Any suggestions on what to do to prevent getting everything my little one brings home?? Thanks so much for your time!!

What can I do next?

Hi Amy -
I am a nurse and around sick kids alot. I am a huge fan of Zicam. The smallest twinge of a sore throat or cough and I'm swabbing away. As long as I remember to do it every 4 hours for the first day, the cold never gets a chance to fully develop. Of course, the best thing you can do is wash your hands. I always keep a little bottle of hand sanitizer in my pocket as well. 'Tis the season!

Hey A.!
I feel for you! I am dreading this season with my 5 year old in school. I suggest flu shots for sure and I use Airborn! It is 100% herbal and it works great! It tastes a little gross...like a tang alka seltzer...lol...but that is what it is for. When someone in my home is sick, I start taking immediately and my symptoms don't become as severe! Plus is is 100% herbal so if you need a decongestant or whatnot you can use one with it. I love it and recommend it to everyone! Good luck!

kids are going to get colds regardless...however, if your daughter never went to daycare and was exposed...her body hasn't built up a defense prior to starting school, so she is probably going to get more than a child who has been in day care for the first few years of their lives.

in terms of you...Cold Eaze or airborn works AWESOME..if you feel something starting to come on start taking it!

Hi Amy. So sorry to hear you're sick. I don't think there is a lot you can do about your daughter bringing germs from daycare, it's par for the kiddie course. But I agree with what one of the other moms said... Airborne (or store brand equivalent) is the best. I've avoided colds/flus many times that everyone else around me got. You have to take it IMMEDIATELY when you begin to feel sick for it to work well enough... but you can also just take it whenever to keep your immunities boosted or if you are aware of a new cold coming around. You probably don't want to take it non-stop, then you might always be sick when you do stop. But ask the day care teachers every day if there are any new colds, and as soon as there is, take Airborne.

Plus the usual hand-washing, like the other mom said, is always a good idea. Good luck with this, I really hope that you aren't in for another sick winter! I'll cross my fingers for you!

I'm a teacher, and I was tired of always getting sick at the beginning of the school year, so I started taking airborne this year. It has worked so far. I've only gotten a sniffle here and there, but nothing that knocked me out for the count like what has always happened in years past.

Amy,

The problem with vitamins is that they are isolated nutrition -- any excess just gets flushed out of your system soon after you take it. If you want to prevent illness, you need to boost your immune system, and that means more antioxidants (disease fighters in the body) that you get from fresh whole fruits and veggies. It can be really difficult to get enough of those, especially raw, which is when they provide the most nutrition and disease-fighting phytonutrients. I'm a distributor for a product called Juice Plus+ -- it's basically 17 servings of fruits, veggies and grains in capsule form (and if you wanted to give it to your daughter, it comes in chewables or gummies). It's whole food based nutrition, so you get all the good aspects of those foods, with phytonutrients that work together -- much better than one or a few vitamins alone. My personal experience, and why I started taking it myself, was after my first year as a teacher. I was sick 6 or 7 times that year, cold, flu, you name it. I started taking Juice Plus+ and my second year, I wasn't sick at all! That doesn't mean I never get sick, but I can see a big difference in the frequency and severity of any illnesses I do get. I'd be happy to get more info to you if you're interested. You can also check out my website and contact me from there -- http://www.juiceplus.com/+ah81530
