When visiting my parents, my mom will often let one of my kids use her chapstick. My mom gerts them a few times thru out the year. Can they be trasferred to the kids thru the use of chapstick? She insists they can't but I disagree since they are a form of herpes.

What can I do next?

You bet they can! I've gotten them that way. Nothing is worse than a cold sore. If they do, check with your doc to make sure it's safe/ok, ( I don't know how old your kids are) but taking a few L-Lysine pills AS SOON as you feel that tingle will usually stop it dead in its tracks. All through my teenage years and still now I take 3 L-lysine pills 2x's the day I feel that notorious tingle start up.

Yes, they can be transfered this way, but I believe only while they have an active sore. BUT, if she used the chapstick at all while ever having one, then I believe it can be passed that way.

Absolutely they can be transferred through chapstick use. I have a friend who occasionally gets cold sores and she does everything she can to prevent them from spreading to others and she preaches about not using other people's chapstick, lipstick, etc. Once you get them you have them for life. Your mom is simply wrong on this one.

Fancy chapstick from Target is $1.47...I just bought a tube today. Pick up a couple tubes when visiting with mom and say their hers for the kids to use. Isn't piece of mind that you DS won't get such a icky set of germs which will be with him for life worth $1.47. Also teach him not to share drinking glasses and kiss on the lips. I wish my parents cared as much. GL!

Yes. My son has had cold sores off and on over the past month or so. He said we should make sure we do not use his spoon or drink from his cup. He also told me it was a form of a virus and not always the type of herpes that can make you very sick.

absolutely and once your kids have had the first cold sore they are forever doomed to catch them. Have your mom buy a chap stick that only the kids use, one for each of them.

Several yrs ago our daughter had gotten some cold sores and we weren't haveing any luck getting rid of them. Then one day I asked the pharmaist what would help get them to go away and NOT to come back. He told me " VIT B6., take one a day for a month. even if they are gone. It has to do with something that the body is missing and B6 replaces it.
I thought heck it is worth a try. So we did and IT WORKS!
So give it a try It won't hurt the child.
Good luck
