Cold Mist Humidifier

Is there a time limit as to how long I should keep a cold mist humidifier on in my daughters room. She will be 7 weeks old this week and has a little cold and I was told by a nurse at her doctors office that I should put the humidifier on for her, I just forgot to ask how long it should stay on for? Anyone know?

I wish she could take Tylenol for infants but they tell me she is too young and she's so miserable. She just looks at me with these sad ideas and I feel bad that I can't do more for her. Not to mention we are still trying to figure out which formula works for her. Yesterday with the doctors guidance we switched her formula again, she is having issues with formula, milk based was not working, soy was so not working and now we are on Enfamil Lipal AR, I think it is working but we need more than 24 hours to tell. I just feel bad for her, first formula issues and now a cold. Thanks for letting me vent and go on a tangent moms.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advise. I ran the humidifier for a little bit. I think she just needs to sleep and get over it. Happy Holidays!!!

I don't think you can run it for too long. I know people who run them all winter long. I am surprised that they say she is too young for tylenol also. I know you aren't supposed to give any cold medicines, but I thought Tylenol was always okay with the right dosage especially if she gets a fever. I hear you though. Both of my kids have had colds for about a week, and it just kills me to see them so miserable and hear their little coughs. I am not sure what the doctors now say about the baby Vicks, but I have used that also. A warm bath can also be soothing. Hopefully she will be able to sleep, because that is what will really help her get through it. Hang in there!

Call your pediatrician's office tomorrow and ask. The nurses can tell you that.

I have never heard of someone running the humidifier for too long. If it's feeling too damp in the room, turn it back. If the windows steam up, that's okay. Just don't let water drip down onto the windowsills. That can make the paint peel later.

Good luck. I wish you and your little girl a wonderful Christmas!

Lisa, I understand about the humidifier. My son gets croup two-three times a year. In the winter time there should be a humidifier going in the house at all times, mostly at night. You want about 60-65% humidity in the bedroom at night. This will help keep the sinuses moist so they do not dry up and make your baby start coughing. Also what you can do is go into your smallest bathroom and turn on the shower (hot water only) let the bathroom fill up with steam and just sit with the baby there. It helps to open the airways so they can breathe better. My son is now three and I have had to do this with him since 3 months old. I hope this helps! Happy Holidays.

We have one in my sons room and we run it at night. If yours has levels, be sure to increase it when your daughter is not feeling well. Ours is usually at low but increrase it when he's stuffy. Also, our doctor recommended using Concentrated Tylenol Infant Drops. We have used those when he's congested. Never for more than 24 hours. Check with your ped for sure.

No limit on how long, just make sure that you clean it and change the filter often. I always put the humidifier in the middle of the room, not to close to him, I also dressed him warmer when I used it. I use it every night all night since he was a baby, he is 2 1/2 now and I swear by them. I also add vapor liguid, it says its only for steaming humidifer's but I use it for my cold one and it sends out vapors just not as intense as a steam humidifier would. Good Luck!

Lisa,
cold meds are truly not safe at this age and have been proven not to be as succesful as the marketing and advertisers claim them to be. Have you tried the little noses brand of saline drops? Those along with the bulb syringe can reduce or remove at least the visible junk in her nasal passages...the other thing is to elevate her bed, not under her head but drop the crib botton one level so her head is higher or put a blanket under the mattress for drainage purposes...do not use a pillow under her of course...this is sadly the time of year all kids, heck adults too are all getting sick...keep family and friends away from her who are ill and wash hands a lot, another good rule of thumb is to encourage visitors to look but don't touch the baby at this age, tell them she is like the Louvre in Paris and strictly hands off for eyes only
good luck
