Hi moms, my one year old has never has liked his milk cold. Even his formula had to be warmed in the bottle warmer and now that we have switched to regular milk, he will not drink it cold, and we still have to warm it up. Any tips on how to get him to drink cold milk? Also, we are giving him what seems like the same thing every other day or so for his meals and snacks. Any suggestions that you can give on your one year old's meals? And how do you get them to start using the spoon? Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

Try mixing in just a little bit of ovaltine and he may drink it cold.
Good meal ideas- mashed potatoes mixed with peas and carrots from can. My son loves this! Homemade spagetti blended in blender under "grate". Omelettes with cheese and various veggies. Cold sandwich meat and american cheese cut in little pieces. Macaroni blended with brocolli under "grate".
You can pretty much feed him what you're eating just cut up into little pieces:lasgana, grilled chicken, roast, etc.
My son also likes when i cook a lean groud meat patty on my george foreman. I add a slice of amercian cheese and cut it into little pieces. I mash up some brocolli, peas, or green beans mixed with a tiny bit of cheese sauce for the side dish. Or I cut up some canned carrots.

My son was teh exact same way at that age. I think I posted something very similar to your question. Anyway, as someone else mentioned, there's no problem with warming it, just try to gradually make it cooler and cooler. It took mine till about 14 months to take it cold. As far as food, don't be afraid to keep giving him baby food. Yes, you do nee dto slowly bring him around to what you are eating, bt some kids take to adult food slower, there's not a desperate need to hurry at that age. Have you tried Gerber Graduates meals. My son adores them all, and they are so easy. He also loves bananas and raspberries. Oh and the fruit cups (that are usually next to fruit juices) in stores are great. You can buy the Peaches with no sugar added now. I believe it is DelMonte that does that. My son also loves shredded ham and Ritz Crackers. Obviously Cheerioes are awesome. In fact, try giving him a bowl of Cheerios with cold milk. That should help your milk issues. My son would eat the milk with Cheerios cold, but wouldn't drink it from the cup that way!

As for spoons, it took us till about 16 months before he'd even try using them alone. Previously he would start holding my hand as I would feed him so he got the motions down. You can buy special spoons that are made for them to start with, but I never did that. We just use regular little plastic spoons. He ate his first meal with one by himself last weekend. (Beans and rice at On The Border!) Oh, and I almost forgot one of his favorite foods that is great for spooning. It sounds gross, but he loves it... Baked Beans mixed with canned peas and carrots! The sauce from the beans helps everything to stick to the spoon. I get the different flavors of Bush's Baked Beans :)

Mine would not drink the milk cold either. I had always used room temp water to mix formula. With the milk, as mean as it sounds, I just kept giving it to her out of the fridge. It took about 2 days of tossing it, and now she loves it.
As far as the food - I never even attempt a spoon. Miss Independent will NOT let me feed her anything and a think a spoon would only make her mad! She eats ever canned veggie there is - beets, peas, carrots, mexican corn...She loves ground beef - meatloaf, burger patties...toast with crm cheese, you name it, she will try it. GOod Luck!

L.,
I had a prob with that too. My 17 month old twins still will not drink cold milk out of a bottle. I think they just associate the bottle with warmth and comfort. So I just gave them sips of cold milk out of my own glass. It has worked and now they will drink milk out of a sippy cup. As for feeding them the same thing over and over...try getting different flavors of applesauce in the fruit isle. They are higher in acid but are actually healthier than some of the baby food deserts. Also begin to cook and mash up some of your own food for him. AS for the spoon, I let them have one to play with while I feed them. I give them a few bites and then let them dip in their spoons. It's messy but it is working and they have become pretty good at it. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Had the same issue with my DS and he just grew out of it himself and doesn't want his warmed up at all now.

Re: foods.
Try different fruits and veggies. Just write down a menu and follow it. I fall into ruts of foods too but sitting down and deciding ahead of time about the month's menu helps to get a variety. And it is good training for him in case he ever gets fussy that we have to eat it as it is what is on the menu.

re: Spoon
Give him the spoon and let him figure it out with applesauce or something he likes that is easy to pickup with a spoon.

my 3 year old was like this...we just did it gradually, same w/ weaning...warm half of it, then cold, lukewarm, warm it less and less, then eventually she got used to it.

my sixteen month old eats pretty much what we eat, and has since she was about 10 or 11 months. she's my good eater, so it's never been an issue. as for the spoon, we give her one, but she doesn't "use" it in it's official capacity. She's learning, though...that's what matters.

I compromised and offered warm milk in the morning and cold milk the rest of the day.
As far as food, for a one-yr-old with teeth, anything that we're eating, only chopped or squashed. Canned veggies are good because they are softer. Steamed broccoli, steamed or baked sweet potato (wrap a sweet potato up and microwave it just like a regular baked potato, or buy the bagged, diced sweet potato in the produce section)
As far as a spoon, it will be closer to age 18 months or 2 before he gets the hang of it. He'll have better luck with a fork. With mine, I'd put the bite on the fork, then let the baby pick up the fork and get it into their mouth. If you don't already have toddler silverware, there are certainly character spoons and forks, but Oneida also makes toddler and child sized silverware that looks just like the grown-up stuff. My mom got us two sets of each and the kids love them.

We did the same with gradually cooling the milk and our kids were better about taking it.
