Yeah--what they said. :)

The caffeine in Coke is acceptable, as well. I was teaching at a continuation high school at the time of my first pregnancy and you should have seen all the "mothers" who came out of the woodwork hassling me about my cup of coffee a day--it's also one of the ways I manage my migraines. I told them my OBGYN said it was fine and about the migraine part and told them that me prenant with a migraine was not something they wanted to take on.... }:)

Good luck and have a great pregnancy! M.

Oh is it! I love coffee, and always had 2 Starbucks a day through both pregnancies. I would just try to make my second coffee of the day half caf, and it was just enough for the mid day hump. People love to make pregnant women feel guilty about drinking caffeine, but in moderation is safe! Don't stress, your baby will come out perfectly :)

Yes, it's safe. When I was pregnant with my younger child, I was actually working at the Peet's Coffee corporate office. There's no way to avoid drinking coffee when you work there! My daughter turned out to be extremely bright - I have no idea if the coffee helped, but it definitely didn't hurt.

Decaf is ok. I had a cup or two a day while pregnant.

I was told by my doctor that (if I remember correctly) up to 300mg of caffeine is perfectly safe for the baby. Depending on your beverage, that's more than a cup of regular coffee and even soda falls within these guidelines. All of my baby books also state the same info. You can find out how much caffeine is in your drink of choice by searching the web if it's not printed on the label.

I believe the rule of thumb is 1-2 cups a day. But you might want to do some research on that, it may have changed as of late with all research in caffein. Have you tried some teas... there are some non-caffeinated. I tried the decaf when I was pregnant, wasn't the same. I limited my coffee to the weekends when my husband would make it for me. I would drink tea at night, I purchased the lowest caffein teas available from Teavana. For me it is just having something hot to hold onto so also try hot chocolate

Yes. My OB said one cup per day was fine and would not affect the baby.

I quit my daily regular coffee with both of my pregnancies because my doctor said it could lead to miscarriage. I suggest going half decaf and regular instead of cold turkey because the headache from caffeine withdrawals is HORRIBLE. If it is only occasionally, then maybe it won't be an issue.
Best wishes!

Moderation is the key. A couple of cups of coffe is fine. Personally I limited myself to two caffeine containing drinks a day with an occasional third. During some of my pregnancies I was working night shift. I figured a cup of coffee to stay awake driving home was less dangerous than falling asleep at the wheel. All four of my kids are fine. By the way we give caffeine to preterm infants in the NICU to help them with apnea of prematurity. Newer studies are suggestion their maybe a neuroprotective effect as well. So don't worry about a few cups of coffee.

I did, and was never told not too by my Dr or midwife. I usually got a latte so there was milk to water down the espresso. But you and your baby will be fine. One Dr I know told a mama friend of mine to have 1 cup of coffee/ morning to help with constipation problems. Just drink extra water the rest of the day you drink coffee to make sure you do not get dehydrated b/c coffee is a diruretic, causing you to pee more
congrats on your baby!

My OB even told me to drink a MILD cup in the morning--think Folgers and not Starbucks-- to help with low blood pressure. It helped me to not feel dizzy.

I think my ob said 1 cup (8oz) of drip coffee per day was ok. The studies showing problems were huge quantities of caffeine (more than the equivalent of 10 cups a day) in rats. I wasn't comfortable with the risk. I had warm milk plus a couple tbs of espresso (less caffeine in one shot of espresso than in one cup of drip coffee). I could have gone with decaf, but hate the taste. You should be fine with the occasional cup and not beat yourself up about it. But when you start breastfeeding, be very careful because that does enter your milk.

Hi R.,

I was never a BIG coffee drinker, but only on occassion. I came to a revelation. Every time I drink CAFFEINATED coffee, the next day I am over the top edgy, I mean to the point where I can't control my edgyness!Coffee does something to my nervous system.

Coffee Dehydrates you alot, because it not only wants to absorb the water around it, it also is a diretic. You need to drink 8 oz of water just to replace the cup of coffee. So if you drank 2 cups of coffee and two glasses of water, it would be like drinking no water that day. Heavy coffee drinkers are in a perpetual state of dehydration. It inhibits calcium and magnesium absorption.(calcium is pulled out of body stores and bone, and it is excreted in the urine (which is the cause of osteoporosis.) Magnesium must be present for body calcium to remain and do it's job.

It increases blood pressure and miscarriage (probably because of it's effect on depleting magnesium)and constricts blood vessels. It depletes adenosine , and depletes b vitamins- also important for functions of nerve impulses, balancing hormones, energy production, avoiding anemia, the condition of our skin, and the feeding of good gut flora that fight infection. And lastly, Coffee is a crop that is HIGHLY laden with pesticides- edosulfan, dursban(extremely toxic and linked to birth defects)diazinin, disulfoton, methylparathion, and others.

I think it's fine. My doctor told me 1 cup a day and I drank coffee with all my kids. They are fine....although that could be why they are so crazy now though.

I think your good it doesn't sound like you drink too much.

I drank coffee about that often during my third trimester of pregnancy and my baby (now 4 months) was/is just fine. However, you should probably talk to your prenatal care provider and let him/her have the final say. Congrats on your pregnancy!

I've read and been told by my ObGyn that 200mg a day is fine. I still cut back during my pregnancy, I only had a few cups a week.
Good luck!
