Cockapoo and Potty Training

Hello everyone. Thanks for the recent advice on the different dog breeds. We fell in love with a cockapoo. She is a beautiful 16 week, 8 lb white female. Her personality is great, she is so snuggly and playfull. She is very smart. She has been with us for four days and is already very attached to us.

The first night she slept in a box in the bathroom. The second night she would not, she cried and barked until we put her in my son's room, in a box on his bed. She has not had any accidents in the house during the day (could be because we have her outside alot) but she is having accidents during the night. Crating her will not work, she will just bark and cry and keep everyone up all night. The only way we can get any sleep is to let her sleep next to my son.

How do we potty train her. How do we potty train her at night when we are sleeping?

Thanks for any tips

What can I do next?

We have a cockapoo that trained very quickly, but he was kept in a crate during the day and slept with us at night (we gave into the crying too). If you have the dog outside most of the day, she is not potty trained. Dog's do not like their space to be dirty, so if in a confined crate, will learn to "hold it" until let out. That is why crate training is so effective. I would highly recommend trying this. And it must be a smaller create so they don't have a lot of extra space to potty in one area but sleep in the other. I absolutely love my cockapoo and they are smart (a litttle too smart sometimes!) but you have to make sure they know who's boss! By the way, our dog loves his crate now...it is his little safe place. Have you tried the crate in your son's room?

You have to teach the dog to like the crate. It is her place where no one will bother her. Of course she will cry, she will need to get used to it and she will be fine. I would not leave an untrained dog out at night especially on my child's bed.

If you haven't tried crating how do you know it will not work? Dogs like to have a "den" where they can feel safe and secure. A crate is a den for them. A box is just a box on the floor or on a bed. It probably doesn't give her any security.

Most importantly, you need to get her to training. Most problems people have with their dogs can be solved by simple training classes. Many people don't do this, and that is why there are so many abandoned/dumped/homeless dogs.
