I'm looking for a good but cheap kind of cloth training pants for my son to start training that don't leak. We've tried just regular underwear but he's not getting it and I'm tired of having to get carpet cleaned.

Dappis training pants are cheap and they work alright. Not the greatest, but most other ones I have found are $10+. I think Dappis are only about $2 each, or less. What size would you need? I have some brand new ones if you would want to try them. I think they are size 4. They fit from about 32-40lbs, I think.

Edited to add that dappis have vinyl on the outside and are absorbant on the inside. I also tried the gerber training pants with the vinyl covers. That was a nightmare! These are a lot better. I use cloth diapers for my baby too, and I make them myself (including training pants) so I am just a bit of a cloth diaper snob, so I don't like vinyl much, but the dappis were pretty good, especially for how cheap they are. as long as you don't let them sit for more than a day before they get washed, they should be fine. Longer than that and they hold onto the pee smell, and it builds up over time. You can find them at http://www.babybestbuy.com They are called early trainer vinyl training pants.

I would suggest putting rubber pants over top the underwear. They even have rubber pants with an absorbant liner so your sons pants won't even get wet, but he will still know that he has wet his pants. When I worked in daycare I found the children who were potty trained using the rubber pants and underwear caught on much faster than the kids who used pullups. When my daughter is old enough this is the route I plan on taking. Hope this helps.

Hanna Andersson carries a 3-pack of boys' training underwear for $26.50. The crotch is a 4-ply cloth panel:

Whatever style you go with, you may need to still put the vinyl/plastic pants over them. Those are hard to find, too, but I've seen them at Peapod's in St. Paul (Snelling & Randolph).

Try the Imse Vimse training pants for daytime (http://www.cottontailbaby.com/item_40/Imse-Vimse-Training...) and then at night time I know a lot of people really love the Happy Heiny ones as you can stuff them with extra absorbency for heavy sleepers who just won't wake up and go.

We really loved the IV ones for daytime. Cute designs, trim fit, absorbent for little accidents. They worked great until we could graduate to Spiderman underwear!

Good luck!

Try Amy with www.TwigandVine.com She has excellent cloth products for much less than commercial brands. I've not tried the training pants yet with the baby only being 14 months, but plan to try Amy's when we're ready. I LOVE her cloth diapers! She is a mom that works out of her home in Minneapolis. Good luck!

We've been using the Gerber training pants, but as others said, they don't hold much. My son won't wear the plastic covers over, plus I found that they just make a mess when you're trying to get them off. I figured out that if you put two pair of the cloth training pants together it does a pretty good job of absorbing everything. I haven't found any wet spots on the floor since doing this.

We used regular undies with the plastic pants over (the ones used for cloth diapers). He learned very quickly to get to the potty. I plan on doing this again when the little one is ready.

I just bought some traing pants for my daughter at Target. I haven't tried them yet. Wishful thinking! They were very inexpensive. I found them by the infant shoes and onesies. They had boys also!

Fuzzi bunz Trickle Free Trainers. Or the Gerber trainers at Wal Mart and the vinyl pants over them.

Or make him clean up himself after he has an accident, take off his went undies, wipe up the mess (with your help of course), rinse out his wets, clean himself up, and have himself get new clothes. A few times of this he'll realize its quicker to just use the toilet.

The Trickle free Trainers from Fuzzi bunz are nice, kind of spendy but they are vyer high quality.

I know about carpet stains! You can find puffy cloth training underwear at Walmart and it comes in boy or girl colors.(3 to a pack) My 3 1/2 yr old daughter still wears them for regular underwear even though she's potty trained so they are a good investment. I also really like easyups by pampers. They are almost as soft as cloth and work just like underwear although they don't work as well for training because they keep you completely dry like diapers.

Good luck- Hope this stage ends soon!

I've bought the Gerber training underwear at Kmart. They are practically useless. They have polyester batting in them, and don't even hold one accident. The Gerber waterproof trainers can be found at Target. They will hold an accident, but are very puffy, and they crackle every time the child moves. I like the Potty Patty (or Potty Scotty) brand of waterproof trainers best (if you're looking for good but cheap). There are several online retailers that sell them, but I found the best deal for them on ebay. 3 for about $25 shipped.

I hope I'm not repeating someone, as I didn't read your other responses...
With my children, I used the thicker underwear. I think they're actually called training pants. They have the thicker strip in the center area of the pants. I found them at Wal-Mart. They weren't next to the regular undies. I think they were near the rubber pants, cloth diapers, burp rags, and bibs area. I hope that gives you an idea where to look. When my son was little, they had really neat pants that had the thick cloth inside and rubber/plastic outside all in one. I haven't found those since... so with my daughter, I had to use the thick cloth underwear and have the rubber/plastic pants over top of them (two separate pieces).

Good luck in your search,
~SR
