Cloth or Leather Seats?

I am planning to buy a new minivan very soon and I am debating between cloth and leather seats. I currently have cloth and it does not seem to have gotten too dirty in the past 2 years. But, I plan to have this next van longer and my kids will also be getting older (they are currently almost 2 and 3), so I am wondering if maybe leather would be easier to keep clean. My kids will be in car seats though and so then I was wondering if maybe this would do anything to the leather. I also have a dog that only rides in back every once in a while. Of course, leather is more expensive also, so I don’t want to pay extra if it is not really worth it. Any of your opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

It takes about 8 cows per car. I would go cloth all the way!!!

the kids wont feel the leather.. they will be in car seats.

I have found leather to be hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

I wouldnt pay extra for it..

dog hair and crumbs would be easier to clean.. but spilled juice would be harder to clean.

I was a little unsure about cloth vs leather as well. We bought used and the van that had the least amount of miles and was the best value had leather seats so that is what we got. I was still unsure until my 3 year old threw up ALL OVER the back seat and I was SO thankful that we had leather. I was able to wipe down the seats and hose off the floor mat and let it air out a bit and it was good as new. No smell!
Good Luck!

I have leather in my van and I love it. They are alot easier to clean. Plus if something gets spilled in the car that might leave an odor wont soak into leather like it would cloth so no smell. Just like one other mother said vomit cleans up very well. As for the seats being to cold in the winter that really isn't true any more. Most leather comes equipped with heated seats and let me tell you those are wonderful. Great for sore backs or sore butt muscles. The car seat does leave indentations but if you are buying and not leasing this vehicle they have protectors you can buy that protects the leather from getting damaged. Great for dogs to, muddy paws clean up nice as well.

ok, about the 8 cows per car... Typically its not real leather but more of a Pleather. :-) I had never thought about how many cows it would take... Now, is that a sedan, or mini van... Gonna have to look into that cause I like odd facts... lol

I would go cloth. If your dog gets on the seat it may be ripped by her toenails.

Cloth feels warmer in the cold winter when you first get in. (Brr...) and you don't stick when your wearing shorts... (driver and passenger will feel the seats)... Your boys are 2 and 3? At some point... Probibly around 4 or 5 they may want to poke the seats and its easier to sew up cloth than leather... And crayon and marker tend to be hidden better by cloth than leather.

I am sooo anti light color seats just for the kid factor. lol (I have 3-5 kids in the van no matter where I go)

If the seats are being used in the summer they will leave marks on the leather that may take a long time to pop out after 5 or so years of having a seat on them. (They are supposed to be in the boosters till 8.)With cloth you can vacuum those out and the seat looks normalish again alot faster. :-)

We always put a seat cover (aka blanket) under the seats so that any spills will be caught on that...

Good luck and happy hunting!

Leather! Any liquid will seep into the cloth...including sweat, tears, pee, juice....and eventually get mildue and mold.
