Cloth Diapers...where to Start

I have a 14 month old that has been in disposable diapers all his life. We are thinking about having another child, but can not afford disposables for 2 children. Our boy has special needs and Drs tell me to expect him to have an issue potty training. I'm thinking about switching him over to cloth diapers, but can not afford the upfront high cost. I know it's better for him and the environment anyway, but it's easier on our budget to pay in "instalments" through disposables. Any advice on what is the best cloth diaper or where to look? I want diapers that will fit both a newborn and a toddler...but cost effective. Thanks.

What can I do next?

we use cloth and they are super easy and not to expensive, you can buy all in one diapers for walmart online they are called kushies they are like $45.00 for a 5 pk which is cheap. they come with washing instructions.

I have a friend who made her own cloth diapers out of flannel. She said they work great and much cheaper than the diapers from the store.

we recently started using cloth diapers along with disposable and got a 10pk of fuzybuns. They have leaked a couple of times but overall am happy with them. From my research people seem to be happiest with bumgenius. My friend has those and we tried them on my daughter and I liked them more than the ones we got. I also tried one of the homemade flannel diapers and it soaked through diaper and clothes in 30-45 min. You can buy diapers 1 at a time or 3,6 or 10 at a time. My 10 were $150. (My mom helped) We have been fine with just having 10 even though they say you need 20-30. Eventually we will get more, like you can't afford the upfront cost. Doing some math if you spend $50 a month on disposables you can cut that cost in half by using just 5 cloth a day. After a few months of saving you can hopefully afford more cloth. Hope this was some help, good luck.

We use cloth diapers on our son and we have found that he does so much better with them (far less diaper rash!). We bought the basic pre-fold package from clothdiaper.com and diaperpin.com has lots of great links about how to fold the diapers and the best ways to clean them, etc. There is a great place in Lee's Summit (which I saw wasn't the closest thing to you) called Happybottomus; happybottomus.com. They sell cloth diaper and other mommy things too.

I have started using Bum genius all-in-ones with my son, now that he is walking, because they are less bulky. But we still use the pre-folds with Bummis whisper wrap covers at night for extra coverage.

My friend recently switched her daughter (9 months) to cloths. She bought a few at K-mart for a test run. She uses Snappies which she learned to use from watching some videos on Youtube.

If you have any questions for me or my friend, email me and I will be happy to help.

Good Luck!!
