Hi moms! I am trying to make the switch to cloth diapers and have tried many brands through a sample program on line. I am having a tough time getting past how bulky there are. Any brands or inserts out there that are thinner that I should try? Has anyone tried Bambino Mio's? They are kind of a combination of cloth and disposables...I am wondering how you like them if you have tried them? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
smartipants are really really trim. so are bumboo pockets by Baby Kicks USA. We have both and I love them.
The Bum Genius ALl IN ONe is not bulky. Or you cound use prefold with cover.
www.grovia.com They are also a combo system..s.they have biosoakers made just like disposables but better for earth...no beads or gels....you can get cloth soakers for home...they are trim too and hold a lot. Another benefit is that it's one size meaning no having to buy a new size every time baby grows!
I haven't found one near as thin as disposables, but hemp liners do help a little. They also hold a lot more urine so they are great for older toddlers.
There is a sampling program? Please tell of that!! I'm also trying to make the switch so I can't wait to hear what others say.

I agree that they are a lot bulkier than disposables. I recommend that you check out http://www.tinkletraps.com/ because I have found her products to be thinner and easier to use than many of the other cloth diapers. She sells them in stores locally in Cincinnati - I don't know if she has any retailers in IN. But you can buy them online.
I've used lots of different kinds of cloth diapers on our son, and they are all at least a little bit bulkier than disposables. But for trimness, I've found Fuzzi Bunz are good. I've used Chinese prefolds, Gerber prefolds, "I love cloth" all-in-ones (from www.diaperkits.com), Mother Ease (this are definitely bulky, but very nice feeling & customizable in absorbtion(sp)/layers), and homemade flannel fitted. (I'm not a great sewer, but if you have a working sewing machine, you can sew a fitted flannel diaper! I used the Mama Bird pattern for most of them, but have also heard good things about Ritas Rump Pocket, both of which are free patterns & directions available online, and can be adapted for fitted, pocket, AIO, etc. per your preference. :).
If you want trim, I would definitely steer away from the one-size diapers (that fit them from 8 lbs or so up to 30 lbs or so; there are lots of different brands). The one-size tend to be bulky, just because they have to fit up to a toddler, so they look big on a smaller baby.
I guess my thought was that I didn't really care that we needed to up-size our kid's pants in order to accommodate the diapers... So, even though he's 18 m, we have him in 18-24m or 24m pants, and frankly we've only had one or two comments in his 18 m about it.
Two less expensive options for trying out some types/brands of cloth diapers:
If you have a "natural baby store" type of place, they sometimes have diaper swaps. For example, in Columbus, there is Bean Sprout, which has a swap 2x per year, which has tons of gently used cloth diapers consigned by other moms. If you're not sure if there is one in your area, ask some of the ladies at your local La Leche League, or local Attached Parenting group and I bet they can connect you.
I would also suggest trying Freecycle (http://freecycle.org). Post that you're looking for cloth diapers. You just might get something useful that way, and for free! I got some newborn and infant Chinese prefolds & fleece AIOs this way, and it gave me a chance to try out cloth and see some styles.
