I am looking for advice on whether I should try Clomid.
I had my first child 2 years ago with no problems and I breast fed her. After I weened her at 13 months I never got a menstraul cycle so I had testing done and it found that I had low progesterone. So I have been doing progesterone to regulate my cycles, which has been helping but I am still not ovulating. Oddly the one and only time i actually ovulated was when I started the progesterone cream back up on day 7 so I shouldnt have even ovulated because of that. Anyway, I have been doing Acupuncture for 6 months and it has been helping regulate my cycles but still no ovulation. My acupuncturist says that she thinks my eggs are not maturing and releasing progesterone like they should.
My other doctor keeps telling me that I should try clomid. I have been against this since the begining. I am concerned about the link between clomid and Autism and some other things. My hubby is currently deployed and returns in September but only for 2 months. My doctor is recommending I try the clomid this month and get testing done to see if I actually ovulate on it. I guess I dont see the risk in doing that but if I do ovulate on it and its the only way to get prego right now I am still having a hard time deteremining if its the right choice. I feel like i am being selfish in taking risks with the drug when Accupuncture is safe. Should I continue to do the accupuncture and wait it out for another 6 months or try the clomid? Its just so hard because I always feel so rushed to try and get prego when my hubby is home because he deploys so much. any advice would be great.

What can I do next?

clomid didn't help me get pregnant...i used it for 3 cycles...i lost weight and felt more "normal" than I had in years...

if you are not comfortable with it - do NOT do it..

you should be HAVING FUN trying to get pregnant!!! don't rush it...it's the stress of TRYING that ruins it..at least for me.

good luck!

Yes, the risk of autism is real and for other readers, you can view the link:http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,###-###-##.... Good for you for looking at the risks. Along with autism, there's also a significant risk of conceiving multiples which can make pregnancy very stressful due to risk of preterm birth and many other complications. Don't forget the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation which is a very serious condition often requiring hospitalization. I understand your desire to have another child (I too have irregular cycle from PCOS and it took longer to conceive #2), but perhaps this is just not the perfect time since you are under so much stress and your husband deploys so often. Having a complicated pregnancy or twins would be very difficult without your husband home. I would really encourage you to have a Dr do some testing of your hormones and find out WHY you are not ovulating. If it's because of PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), there are lifestyle changes that you can make that will help you conceive naturally. For example, just losing as little as 5-10% body weight can restore ovulation (worked for me and I have 3 naturally conceived healthy kids!). There are also dietary changes and medications like metformin that can help regulate blood sugar to restore ovulation. Please focus on your own health so that you can be in the best health to conceive and carry a healthy baby. I encourage you to wait on the Clomid and in the mean time get some answers to how you can restore your health. There's a reason why you have low progesterone and it's likely because your other reproductive hormones are out of balance. Wishing you the best in growing your family size. Midwife Mom of 3

I have never heard of that link either. I tried it twice to get prego with baby number 2, didn't work for us. I was told I had no eggs left, and that Clomid cannot make you produce eggs you don't have. It is supposed to stimulate what you do have left. Six years later, this past January,we became parents again of a healthy baby boy using no intervention. Surprise!!

Didn't work for me, and the side effects were atrocious! Get a 2nd opinion, and/or seek out a fertility specialist. They can give you a multitude of options other than clomid. Good luck!

I had no idea there was a clomid/autism link, but I used clomid to conceive my first 2 kids. Worked like a charm. The only risk I was worried about was the multiple birth thing!

how do you know you're not ovulating? i've never heard of a link between autism and clomid... interesting.

i took clomid for all three of my pregnancies. the first time, it took one month, but that resulted in a miscarriage. the second time, it took two mos. and resulted in my now 4 1/2 year old daughter. the third time, it took two mos. and resulted in my now 15 mos. old son.

i have PCOS... and tested with an ovulation test strip every day (super cheap on ebay).

make sure you get a good dr. you should start w/ the lowest dosage of clomid possible (and increase the dosage if you don't ovulate)... and you should only take it for 6 mos. in a row (according to most drs)

no matter what.. it's not easy. good luck!

I've never heard of a link between clomid and autism. Remember, it can be a correlation and not a causal link. In any case, if you're willing to do it at all -I would base my decision on how quickly you want to have your second child. My husband and I ended up having to wait a long time b/c we ended up having IVF -so our kids will be 4 1/2 years apart. If you want your kids closer in age I would try now. Or perhaps it would be good for your body to have a rest and continue with the accupuncture.
